What on earth is going on?

So, my gf bought a 'broken' machine, i5 1155, m-atx foxconn board, 560ti and 4x2GB sticks and a nice little PSU. Ya know, a mid spec pre made gaming rig.

Anyway, I stripped it and came to the conclusion it was the board after it would go to boot but stay with fans on, all powered up but nothing on screen (via gpu or mobo).

Installed new mobo today, little MSI 1155 jobby, refurbished.

All plugged in an NO power. The moment I press the power button, the gpu lights on top of the card come on, but nothing else. As though no power to the board at all.

The gpu power lights go off after you turn off the PSU. Turn it back on, no lights on GPU power connectors, until you press the case power.

I've tried all the usual's, triple checking i/o pins, tried bridging the power switch pins, tinkered with ram and 24pin connector. Nothing I do will bring it to life...

HOWEVER, one time, it randomly decided to play ball, I did NOTHING but press the power button after tinkering with the 24pin (tried regiggling around a thousand times since), it booted, I killed it after a second as I didn't have CPU cooler on, and since, nothing as usual.

Any ideas? Is it possible for a mobo to save it's self due to duff PSU? Hence the foxconn able to 'boot' but no display and the MSI seeing a fault and refusing to boot entirely?

I don't have time to properly test sadly otherwise I'd have ripped my PC apart to test it on her components.

what cpu cooler is it? if its a after market one make sure its not been tightened up too much as this can cause booting issues

Tried one stick of ram, CPU cooler is a Intel OEM one. PSU is a ******** 600w.

It seems the competitors name is considered a sweary. Basically, it's a pre made machine from one of the UK's leading computer supplier. Used to have a shop in Reading.

On Saturday I intend on testing everything. Bit by bit in my system. Even powering my system with the psu.

Daft question you have install the extra 8 / 4 pin for the cpu power :p

Couple other options to try is a CMOS reset and one memory stick at a time.

Do you know the model motherboard and cpu being used as the motherbord might need a BIOS update to work with the current cpu.

Hopefully no damaged has been done with the system energising with no cooler on.

Yeah motherboards can kind of refuse to turn on. This could be a lot of things, can't tell yet from the symptoms, but guesses would be the PSU and some kind of short on the case (a frayed wire perhaps). Does your board have a POST led, or do you have a PC speaker attachment to pick up POST beeps?

Can you not send the PC back to be replaced?
Surely they will allow you to return/ replace a broken product?
