What on earth is this fixing?!

Simple prep job ahead of redoing my bathroom - removing the wooden curtain rails from above two windows.

30 minutes later, having used chisels, pliers, hammer, mole wrench, I resorted to drilling the single most stubborn fixing I've ever encountered. There were two of these on each curtain rail!

Can anyone tell me what in the name of beelzebub's backside this thing is?!

It's designed not to come out.

They use the same design for piles now, but a little bit larger.
