the internet in the family house has been this way for many years , originally set up by the eldest brother, suffering from bad download speeds for a long time im finally tired of it and looking how to improve it but what confuses me is the actual setup of the wiring and routers, simply i have lived elsewhere and its never been done in such a complicated manner.
my connection from the phone line to PC.
> phone line wall socket (single phone line connection avaiable)
> phone line to Ethernet moden router
> ethernet cable to wireless router plugged in via the WAN socket
> ethernet cable from 1 of 4 additional ports on wireless router to PC
the single socket phone line has at least 2 splitters for actual phones on it aswell, though the one splitting off for the Ethernet modem is plugged in 1st.
the wireless router doesnt actually have a phoneline socket so i cant even try bypass the moden router.
are we still using standard phone lines for this sort of thing ?? i dont even know, all i know is that i have never needed 2 routers before so could i find a newer model that would encompass BOTH boxes into one, would this even help... is the setup up even a problem as it is... i really dont know how these things work in the slightest.
i have the only wired connection to the wireless router (the ethernet modem router doesnt posses any additional slots other than the ones stated as being used alredy) and at least my speeds dont seem to be dictated by other users or peak times or DL service used.
on another quick note how do these 'test your broadband speed' things actually work, or at least are they accurate, ones you would view through the net with a flashplayer screen.
atm i average 400-700KBS/s DL with a good service at the best of timeswith a mere 50KBS UL absolute max.... these apparent Speed testers would rate me at 5.5MBS DL and 400KBS UL.
i understand there are a lot of things i could potentially look at but i would like to start with this wiring and 2 boxes setup so any advice on that specifically would be appreciated.
