Just restarted one of my desktop PC's after working on it this morning.

All seemed to be normal till after the POST screen and then instead of jumping to the Vista loading bar a very strange screen appeared.

The only way I can describe it is it was like looking at a real virus under a microscope. The screen started off all blotchy and red and green like a virus under a microscope moving about and slowly spread a big black clot from the top right of the screen down to the bottom left till the screen was completely black.

Then the desktop appeared and the system appeared to be working as normal.

I restarted the PC again and the same thing happened.

So I restarted once more this time running an avast! boot scan and it found one instance of Win32 Vitro.

Now I had Vitro a few months back and ended up reformatting completely to get rid of it. Strange that its found a remnant of the thing, possibly within a folder on my backup hard drive I'm not sure.

However, I have searched the web for further info and nowhere can I find anyone else saying they have had this "microscopic" looking thing happen to them with a Vitro infection.

Any ideas?.

It appears to be gone now, after running 2 complete scans in Safe Mode with System Restore turned off plus a boot time scan I think the system is now clean. But it's still niggling me what this weird green/red mess was at bootup!!.

It sounds interesting, wish you could have got a pic of it.

What you're describing sounds like it could also be a problem with your monitor. Is it LCD or CRT? Was it cold prior to the boot? How old is it, and have you had problems before?

It would be nice if you could duplicate the issue.

I'm not sure Win32 Vitro is a boot sector virus. There isn't much info on it.

I know, I had my camera phone ready after I ran the scans but once it booted up the image didn't appear again.

Monitor is a 19" Octigen widescreen LCD. About 2 years old. Had no issues with it to date and it first happened when I came in from work this morning and the PC had been sat switched off all night.

Don't think vitro is a boot sector virus, no. avast! found it during the boot scan but not in the boot sector, it was in C/Program Files/Globalscape/CuteFTP.exe that it found the Vitro virus and deleted it.

The first hit regarding it doesn't really decribe symptoms other than it attacks EXE files. Strangely, Avast seems to be the only program that finds it. Also, many people in that thread are saying it keeps coming back, even after a format. Looks to be a bugger, for sure.

Well there is a way to replace the normal windows loading bar screen by altering a registry key (at least you could in XP). So it is possible that a virus has done that.
As you can POST and it loads the desktop properly I dont think its a hardware problem.

Shame you didnt get a picture, sounds very bizzare.
