I don't see any recommended opensource threads so thought I'd start one here!
Hopefully we can get some good recommendations on what opensource everybody is running here and why - it doesn't matter wether you are running it at home or in the enterprise, so I'll make a start
1. Nagios - Distributed monitoring setup, over 10k services monitored across 30+ sites (distributed nagios CORE deployments running CentOS from 5.2 to 5.5, mix of 32bit and 64bit, no yum // cpan internet connectivity due to firewalled setup - some feature local CPAN // CentOS mirrors) firing check data via firewalled VPN to HA central repository running customised NagVis, Nagtrap frontend on plasma screens. Hardware is a mix of HP servers, single core to hex cores. MySQL is the choice database which stores data fed in via multiple SNMPTT sources, works extremely well if a headache to setup, custom scripting in Perl, WMI, C# etc.
2. VMware ESXi - need I say anything, awesome client software and "just works".
3. Xenserver 5.6 FP1 - I'm a big fan of Citrix Virtualisation - deployed in both a data centre across multiple Dell R series servers (pools) and at home in a lab environment, backup software is either PHD or Quorumsoft, my personal preference is Quorumsoft. Multiple GE NICS configured at the NIC and switch in 802.3ad LACP mode for boost in performance. Why have I wrote more here than for ESXi? because you can quite easily get your CCA Certification with Xenserver for nothing more than some cheap kit and an exam, the VCP on the other hand is >£1k+ - you must attend the overly expensive course, yet I don't think they are seperable on a CV job wise......for the price of a VCP I would get the Citrix certification and a CCNA, then CCNP.
4. Xenclient - running on my laptop (supports only VT-X VT-D) very cool, in BETA at the moment but showing a lot of potential, similar VMware product is VMware View but not free, not trialled that so interested to hear if anyone is using it.
5. Xendesktop - deployed in data centre, impressive and fun to setup.....
6. XenApp - formerly Citrix Presentation Server 4.5, still 4.5 in Xenapp 5, Xenapp 6 is a redesign, why is it in this thread? because you can get a free 1 year DEV license, very cool wares, if you've not played with it give it a go - highly recommended.
7. Netscaler VPX Express - another Citrix product, free with a max throughput of 5Mb (used to be 1Mb last year), load balancer and application accelerator, active - active, GSLB etc, I used it to build a HA deployment of Nagios.
8. DRBD - Block level IO replication host to host (Linux), no requirement of SAN/shared storage, very cool!
9. MMR - MySQL replication db to db
10. Clonezilla
11. PING
12. OpenSIPS
13. Openfiler
14. Nexentastor
........................
EDIT: Forgot to add the networking stuff, GNS3, Olive (Juniper)
