Hi what opteron would you advise getting? choices between 160, 165, 170, 175?

What do each of these usually overclock?

IS THE 165 BASICALLY A DOWNCLOCKED 4400?

ta :)

Sort of, it is the same core, same cache and usually overclocks to the 4400+s 2.2 Ghz (and beyond) without breaking a sweat.

165: 1.8 Ghz (no equiv)
170: 2.0 Ghz (X2 4000+)
175: 2.2 Ghz (X2 4400+)
180: 2.4 Ghz (X2 4800+)
185: 2.6 Ghz (FX-60)

If you have a good/high fsb motherboard might as well get the 165, check the stepping/week out before you buy.

Hi

Thanks for the info kno nuffin bout opterons. :)

My mobo can doo 300*9 fine, and it looks like most 165's can do this aswell.

Might go for the 170 though, means I could do 300*10 :)

BTW saw the 165 @ 104inc vat :O (thats good aint it? And ive seen 3800+'s for 75inc vat) All brand new!

You can even get a 185 new for 200sh but trouble is that Core 2 Duo makes them all look iffy value. I'd try get a cheap, high clocking one from an upgrader rather than pay full whack, cos lets be honest, how long are you gonna keep it before the upgrade bug bites? :p

Yeah 200 is far too much, especially as I could get a new mobo and 6300 for about that, oc that and whoop its ass :)

But for around 100inc vat and del if possible im trying to get a dual core (2x1mb version) that will do 300*10

Might we worth holding out for a little longer on the OPterons 939s as AMD has got a big load of cpus to get rid of. Most AMD servers have gone over to AM2 faster than expected which means AMD have got huge pile of 1 series socket 939 cpus sat around doing to naff all. I have seen 144 retail boxed for £90inc vat recently and the prices of 165 & 170 should drop nicely.
But to be honest the C2D 6300 will kick it around the playground a couple times and mash it to pieces.

The prices have already dropped, they are now similar to/in line with the Athlon 64/X2 equivalents, for example the Opteron 150 (2.4 Ghz, 1MB cache) is around £95, Opteron 165 (2x 1.8 Ghz, 1MB cache per core) around £110.

Wow, prices have dropped! just found a 165 for £106inc vat and in stock.

Nice price for a dual core Optie, my San Diego 3700 is coming tomorrow and I paid £51inc vat for it! Hope it clocks in rd3200cf-dr mobo.
