A friend of mine has an original 60GB PS3 (backwards compatibility etc), which has given him the yellow light of death. Its way past its warranty, and im wondering what options there is for it. Do Sony still repair these in the UK ? How much do they charge ? Anybody else had this recently ?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Sony will repair/replace for £100 if you argue enough else its £150, some places will repair it for around the £50 mark or you can DIY repair using a few guides about. There is one about on here if you search for YLOD, its not always a permanent repair though and may break again.

This is a good eg of why so many 60gb owners recently traded their system for the new 120gb. As it actually works cheaper to trade in and get a Slim. It's a shame no new people can sign up to continuous play.

I thought Sony charged 149 pound to repair 60gbs.

Will a shop take a repaired YLOD PS3 in for trade if it's repaired by the OP? As there are various guides on recovering from the Yellow Light problem with PS3, and they do work. I've done one myself. It's been going strong for ages now

Just thinking, he could get it, repair it. Trade it for a Slim

When I took mine in they gave me the credit and didn't check if my 60gb even worked. I could have just give them a faulty one. hehe.

I got YLOD a few weeks ago and I fixed it with a heatgun and some thermal paste. It took a few hours to do, but it works perfectly now :)
I spent about £5 total because I already had a heatgun, but you can get them for £20 or so.

So is it worth chopping in the 60GB I got as a replacement for my bog standard 40GB. :D

Do you get a decent trade in price or is better to stick it on the bay

I'd attempt fixing it myself tbh, £100-150 quid is too much. 60Gbs don't fetch that much money anymore, on the bay they seem to be going for under 200 with games and accessories.

trade it in for a slim, they dont check them in a certain big games retailer

I was under the impression that when you traded in something in a highstreet store you had to create and account with them. The result of which is them having your name and address on file to give you a shout when your trade in proved faulty.

yea i worried about that. i recently traded my 60gb ps3 for a slim at local high street chain of games shop. why? because it has overheated the odd time and i couldnt justify selling privately because it may be future hassles.

they took my console into the back, powered it up and 'tested it' whether they have a testing programme or benchmark programme or they just whack a game in at random im not sure.

Yes i did give them my real address. do i think they have any come back? not a chance, the thing could fail at any time, in my posession, or in theirs. besides if they are taking in 2nd hand consoles shouldnt they be refurbing them/prepping them for resale anyway?

as far as im concerned the ps3 i gave them works, they had chance to test it. i made an offer on a new ps3 slim with mine as trade in, they accepted. my hands are clean!
