If so you would be best looking at Linux unless you are happy to shell out for Windows server.

If you give us a bit more of an idea of how you plan to use it I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions.

yea just home use, i intend on building a media center pc too which will store the music and videos etc on the server so that the other computers can access the files aswell without the media pc being on 24/7

currently there are 3 desktops and a laptop. i have parts lying around to make up a server. media center pc will be in the near future.

with only 1gb ram and either a 2700 or 3200 would this 'server' be slow?

im thinking of getting gb network cards for each machine and a gb switch aswell to speed things up
