What OS for old games? Or games in general?

Hi all,

Asked about OS's in another thread but got nowhere with game compatibility?

I plan to build a new PC sometime, but what OS? XP Pro 32bit? Vista 32bit? Vista 64bit? Or leave it all?

Some of the old games I still play are Dawn Of war, Age of Empires, and all Command & Conquer titles. I have heard rumours of C&C not being compatable with Vista?

Is there a best OS option which will be compatable with old and new games?

i had a flash back of trying to play old dos games in xp... :)
Do a quick check on their websites, most older games have patches for newer os.
 
32bit XP, you will find guides on how to get just about any game to run on that. Some older titles including the original C&C flat out deny Vista 64bit to my annoyance.
 
if your simply looking to play old games get xp, if you are looking at future games as well though get vista.
 
A thing to remember is that you can always dual boot with XP. Make a very stripped down copy with nlite and create a partition of a few GB for it, no space wasted as you can install games to another partition that you use with your main OS (Vista say).
 
First install 98 SE (which includes proper MS DOS, make sure u get the mosue driver etc tho and perhaps use norton commander for easier browsing).
Then install xp pro.

And done, dualboot xp and 98 which also has dos= play anything but vista only games.

For sure.
 
some games work better in vista32 than xp, i cant think of which ones did or not offhand. you could also use vmware and install the apropriate os for the game (95/98 for the older C&Cs)

All C&C's work fine though even in Vista x64 ( at least mine do from the first decade pack)
 
If u going for dual boot get xp and vista. Then download dos box for xp (not sure if it works on vista) and u sorted.
