Hi all,

I have an old laptop that i will give to my son, He uses it mainly for youtube and sometimes he likes to create publisher slideshows. The specs of the laptop are...

Intel Celeron 1.4ghz
256MB Ram
60Gb HDD
bog standard intel graphics
USB

As it has no Wifi, I am using a small Edimax wifi dongle, Would this laptop benefit from a Linux Ditro? or maybe some sort of cut down version of Windows?

with 256mb of ram, even XP would struggle these days. i'd either look at upgrading the ram or going for some lightweight linux install. obviously you'd be better off asking in the linux forum about that.

Can you upgrade the RAM?

Most tasks will be painfully slow on that spec.

That will struggle with youtube. Better off spending £50-100 on a used laptop with a Dual core CPU and 1-4GB Ram that can run W7 happily.

My old laptop used to be the same spec, I upgraded it to a 2.2GHz Pentium 4 and ~780mb RAM. It did help but internet browsing was still pretty painful.
