Hi guys,

I've just done another case upgrade to the Lian Li PC-X2000, but people familiar with this case will no that the optical drives aren't hidden behind a door, they are infact on the side of the case.

Both my DVD drives are white and so is my floppy disc drive, I will just buy new (and better) DVD drives with black faces so they are no problem, but my Floppy drive is the only remaining piece of hardware from my original rig from 10 years ago, everything else (inc cables) have all been upgraded.

So for purely nostalgic reasons I wish to keep it and just paint the drive itself to match the black brushed aluminium of the case.

Now stupidly I tried using my black metalic car paint and, although the finish is the perfect colour and shine giving it a nice metal look, it is too blotchy and quite hard to paint evenly. I am going to rewind my hidious attempt and try again...

I'm after advice on what type of paint would give a finish to match the cases colour and texture as close as possible.

Cheers

Satin black? So stick to car paint yeah? Aren't there any better types of paints to use specifically for plastics like these?

If car paint is the only which will give me the metalic looking finish, how can I stop it from blotching? Bit of paint thinner you reckon?

Cheers

Car paint or plasti kote will do the job you will find it hard to get the metalic look your after to match the case but with satin it will be close,no need to mix the paint with anything just prep it with 800 grit wet & dry before you put the paint on so its got somit to stick to.

Do they...?! I'm gonna give that a google, the thing with the bezels is that the buttons will stilll need painting BUT that's minor to do compared to the whole face. Cheers for the info.

It has it's own button... I think you set your floppy drive further back in the pc and mount the bezel in front (in the same way you mount the drive bay cover). the button on the bezel then pushes the floppy drive button... You would probably have to check they line up though, but if not I'm sure you can mod it.

Oh I see, it's not actually a replacement bezel, just kind of an interface... Sounds like a good plan. Will check the bay once I'm home from work as it's blocked here, cheers bro.

@paradigm: You joker, it's purely for nostalgic value... and if I ever want to boot into DOS using my win95 boot disk :p

Boot into DOS using a boot CD?

If you are doing it for "nostalgic value", build your PC into a non-descript beige box, use a 5 1/4" floppy, install Windows 3.11, and attach a mechanical keyboard and 2-button ball mouse.

Otherwise, bin the floppy. It's a pointless piece of tech.

Ha ha ha the booting into DOS was a joke! The nostalgic value purely comes from the fact it is the only remaining piece of hardware from my initial build 10 years ago... It is pointless, but pointless thing often hold the most personal value.

Anyways, cheers for the advice from helpful people.

If a floppy drive holds "personal value" you need a life.

But if you "have" to paint it, I'd use flexible vinyl dye as that way it won't scratch off.

You're a joker! My PC means a lot to me, just like my first car did, but I guess trying to explain this will just raise further questions. Cheers for the advice on felxible Vinyl, I will check that out too. :)
