I let my 5 year old play on the Cbeebee's webpage and The Milkshake Webpage when hes been a good lad. But you know what kids are like for messing around and with him knowing how to read and spell stuff out im alittle worried leaving him alone, but i cant always be looking over his shoulder.

So what programs do you guys use to monitor, limit or control what they do.

Thanks.

Nothing at present. We have the PC in the room where there is pretty much always someone around and then use open DNS to limit what can and can't be resolved.

She is only just 5 though so maybe we will need more in future.

Pretty sure at 5 years old he's not going to be looking for porn, well I'd hope not. I don't have kids at the moment so please take my opinion as completely uninformed, but why are you so bothered about limiting and controlling their internet activity?

The only reason I can think of is to prevent them from accidently downloading a virus, or buying a massive digger on ebay (it's been done)

I use Windows Live Family Centre for my PC and have blocked everything to do with Porn
on there and also you can limit what programmes are used and setup times that the account
can be used and things like that, give it a try mate.

use opendns content filtering it is free and super easy to configure and if you do it on the router realy difficult to circumvent unless you are technical. Plus i find that dns filtering is far superior than software based.

Also you can use pfsense and squid+squidguard if you want to do a big project.

Im still having a play about with this Windows live family thing. Ill have alook at this Opendns filter thing and compare the two. :)

A friend asked me about this subject a few months ago so I did a bit of digging around and found this to recommend to him :-

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

He's been using it for a while now and rates it very highly. Get's good user reviews and feedback and is free to download. Worth a look.

^ that's what I use too. Good stuff.

Have parental controls set up too, so that I can limit the time that he's on the PC. Only problem is that the little bleeder's learned to change the RTC via BIOS - he's 8 :(

I now just use the inbuilt windows one.
When my kids were younger, i used to use a dedicated kids web browser called Kidrocket, it will only let them on child sites like CeeBeebies, Disney, etc....

No product is fool proof. If your child is too young or does not know better spend the time with him. At least then, should worst case happen you are actually there to invoke advice. Trusting a PRODUCT to be 100% at the risk of not being there is pretty foolish in my opinion. You very much can be over his shoulder, or at least over his shoulder without him knowing about it.

You know the second he is old enough, capable enough and curious enough he will find harsh elements of the real world on the internet or if not there, elsewhere. There is nothing you can do to stop that.

By all means use a product as a safety net, but it most certainly should not be your frontline.

Been playing with that windows live family and that is plentiful for what i need now. I can block all adult content or all content and just add allowed sites. I can set time limits on, which wont even let him log onto his user account if its not in the allocated time zone. And it can also lock out the main folders so he cant tinker about.

I stumbled across that K9WebProtection site too was going to give that a try untill someone mentioned Windows live family .

Thanks Everyone for your input.

I remember when I was about 12, my parents put some kind of protection on there to block me getting on to websites and give me a daily time allowance. I downloaded a keylogger and logged their password.

When my parents found out I was using the web when I shouldnt have been, they phoned the company who made the protection software and had a right go at them that a 12 year old was able to hack their product. :D

Didn't want to start a new thread so thought I would bump this.

Anyone recommend parental control software that allows for central management, got 3 lappys to lockdown and don't fancy configuring accounts on each machine.

I remember when I was younger my Dad activated Parental Controls on my BT Broadband Account. If I used the BT Yahoo Browser (A Skinned IE) i was restricted but Dad never knew I had installed firefox. Restrictions adverted!

That's all well and good for a Dad who didn't know his way around a PC but unfortunately for my kids, I'm quite well versed lol

If I can't figure out a software solution I think I'm just going to have to sort something out on the router.
