What PC mags do read?

I used to read Custom PC on the trip from Reading to Exeter and back, it was alright but all the information was a month out of date by the time it got to the shelf.

I would stay away from PC Gamer though. I wouldn't wipe my behind with it. I got fed up with at least 20-25 pages of the mag being dedicated in some way or another to Half-Life 1/2 or it's sodding mods.

i subscribed to three issues of PC Pro (DVD version) at £1 each just so I could get a free toolkit (that was sent twice :)). The third issue arrived today and I swiftly cancelled the subscription.

I would usually not bother with any magazines.

While I can read reviews etc online sometimes I just like to take a break from the PC and be able to read something I find interesting from the comfort of my bed/sofa/garden.

I find I don't pay much attention to online reviews anyway unless I am actively looking for a purchase. I am happy to read "out of date" information as it isn't in any way pressing. I also enjoy some of the various features like how things work and also people's case mods.

So, all in all, worth it. :)

i read custom pc, its ok kinda funny in a weird way

i used to read pcformat years ago but got sick of £6 an issue!
i used to read micromart but got sick of essential reading the same article all the time... this week - how to overclock your pc... again :(

The only problem with web based articles i've found, it that you only go there when you have something specific to look for but they don't spark interest off in the first place. For example, you are sitting reading through a magazine and something catches your eye which generates interest which (maybe) you wouldn't have otherwise have found. This is the case of tips, utilies etc..

Custom PC is fine for hardware releated issues but it need to be a little of "hands on", like utilites to try and thing to do. There is a smal section on this but it's limited to a few pages. It needs a windows/linux/utlities section. I find the magazine rather repetitive and I've read it in a few days. Don't get me wrong, it's a good read but it needs something a bit extra.

It also means I don't end up spending money on things because they "caught my eye" :D

I find the forums do that for me though... :)

I read PC Format and Custom PC

PC Format is a fairly light hearted read whilst remaining informative. Watching Luis destroy people with his sarcasm is quite funny.

Custom PC I find is in a similar vein to PC Format (probably is made by the same bunch) but focusses on customisation (funnily enough). Still a good read.

I agree, you can find a lot out on the web, however you have to sift through a hell of a lot of rubbish to get any relevant, decent information. It's not something I mind doing, but I don't have a lot of time these days.

Besides, sometimes it's nice to sit on the bog with some decent reading material ;)

Used to read PCW (since 1991). Subscription ran out & not bothered to renew it. Resources on the net are now so much up-to-date/better/etc :)

I stopped buying PC magazines a long time ago.

The are expensive for what you get - (usually a very low ratio of content to advertising).

More often that not the editorial and reviews are hopelessly out of date, not their fault as publishing on paper has longish lead times.

Often the reviews are rehashes of the manufacturer's press releases anyway and offer little in the way of impartial critique.

As for reviews of games, I have wasted too much money on the basis of glowing magazine reviews only to find that the reviewer was dazzled by eye-candy into failing to notice the absence of gameplay.

I read CustomPC mag, I find it very useful especially the current issue with the HDD reviews... although I cannot justify a reason to buy the Samsung 500GB lol even though I need a new HDD, I cant see me using 500GB as I havent used my 200GB yet. Who know's what ill do lol.

Started off with a PCW borrowed from a friend in Dec2000 and got hooked on that for 2-3 years. Then moved on to PC Format but I haven't bought any in well over a year.

I used to buy PCW for the 3D graphics section (was just getting into it at that stage) then they got rid of it!

As everyone else has said though. The internet has everything you'd need!
