I just salvaged a sound 160Gb IDE from my aged parents aged Sky+ box (circa 2005, date code translates to 2005-12-01) and installed period correct XP on it but its now gonna get Win98SE and Win2000 :)

Was able to get a 1TB SN850 a few weeks ago for £120, already had a Sabrent Rocket 1TB which is now my 2nd drive, 2 250GB samsung ssd's from donkeys ago. Had 6/7 500GB drives from Sky+ boxes from over the years although only retained 1 in my new build. Might see if I can get a cheap NAS and stop paying for my dedicated server which runs my Plex lol

128 Gb Crucial M4 boot disk

2x2 Tb Adata Nvme Raid 0 (for single 4tb, the raid actually slows them a little)

2x16 Tb Seagate Exos for backups, music, media etc

And a few old drives used for external backups.

Any opinions on the Samsung 980 Non pro m.2 as a game storage drive? I know its dramless but is that going to be a problem for games? I can get one right now at a decent price is the reason I'm interested.

Sorry to go off topic, didn't want to make a separate thread for this.

Tomorrow I will be moving away from mechanical storage drives to all solid state and whilst backups are still on external mechs, these will shift to SSD too later this year.

So as it stands:

OS: Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe 1TB
Storage: Samsung 870 QVO 8TB (replacing 4TB WD Red + 4TB Ironwolf)
As iIs Backups: 3TB WD Green HDD + 2TB WD Red HDD
To Be Backups: Samsung 870 QVO 8TB

I might consider cloud based backup if the prices are decent towards Xmas time though as reliability/redundancy is a world apart vs local backup storage.

Not sure what to do with the HDDs, will have 13TB of HDDs going spare... MM? :p

I suppose that lot would be perfect for a home NAS solution though so this could also be an option.

Yes that drive will be amazing for gaming etc. You won't have any problems due to no DRAM and the speed is as good as any PCI 3 drive.

I've 4 laptops of various ages from brand new to one nearly 20 years old, a home gaming PC/Media Centre and a dozen other HDD's in various forms (USB enclosure or internal) all laying about.

IIRC (maybe missing a couple),

1x 120GB SSD
1x 250GB HDD
1x 250GB M.2
1x 500GB SSD
1x 500GB HDD
5x 1TB HDD
1x 1TB SSD
2x 1TB M.2
1x 4TB SSD
4x 4TB HDD
1x 4TB M.2
1x 8TB HDD

In daily use are the 8TB (PC - media & backup), 4TB SSD (PC) & M.2 (Laptop) for Steam games and 2x 1TB M.2 (OS on both - PC and Laptop). I regularly use 2x 4TB External HDD's as back-ups for the 8TB media/back-up drive but other than that the rest are sat gathering dust, either in old laptops or sat in my hard-drive "spare box'o'bits".

2x 1Tb samsung 970 evo in raid 0
1-1Tb Samsung ssd 860
Several 1Tb external ssd’s for video and photos

was thinking of getting a couple of pcie 4.0 nvme drives and running them in raid 0 on a x570 motherboard. Is there much speed improvement to be had? What with windows 11 supposedly taking advantage of high speed drives in supported games.
