what physx card to get?

What took you so long ? I have been waiting for someone to make a weak attempt to justify, wasting a perfectly good GPU on FizzX.

IMO you are better off without FizzX, but if you must have one card bumbling away, I believe the recommended card to run the FizzX efectX in Maffia 2 is a GTX285 :p
You seem to be missing the point that it is the OP who is willing to spend the extra money, so he can have better experience on playing Mafia II? A 2nd hand 8800GT can be picked up at around £35, and a 9800GTX+/GTS250 around £40 so it's not breaking the bank or anything. Also, the recommended GTX285 as PhysX card is clearly exaggerated by Nvidia...while a 8800GT/9800GT 'may not' provide as much extra performance as a GTX285 as a PhysX card, but it only a fraction of the cost of a 2nd hand GTX285.

Whether you like it or not, fact remain that with PhysX enabled in Mafia II, having a dedicated PhysX card will deliver higher frame rate than having both the graphic and PhysX running off a single card:

Its more than just higher framerates, having a dedicated GPU doing physics is a lot smoother (less stutters) than having the same card do both. Even when you have say a setup like say GTX460+GTS250 v GTX480 the 460+250 setup would likely be smoother even tho not as high fps.
