RAW offers further production to imagery that HAS to be applied as all presets are disregarded as a RAW file. Hense why jpegs look better out out of the camera, Most DSLRS/compacts will allow you to push these presets quite high and so little post production is required. I normally give things a going over in RAW and then if something needs specialist attention, Photoshop. To be fair Photoshop can pretty much do it all.

most of my stuff is done in max res jpeg, settings in camera set to minimum, just upload to pc and run a batch action which is autolevels, resize and unsharp mask. That would cover 95% of what I do.

The rest will normally be shot in RAW and adjustments made as appropriate.

I usually adjust the levels and curves manually then resize then unsharp mask, then add a border and save out as Save as... not save for web as this loses the exif data.

You can change the default for the metadate to include the exif.

How? :)

When i started out i was saving for web at around 90% quality (or so). I started using Save as.. to keep the EXIF and i couldnt believe how much better the images looked. I'll stick with Save as i think!

EDIT: I personally go with a routine something like this;

- measure tool + rotate canvas
- levels/curves
- bring out any shadowed areas, if needed
- use a levels/curves mask to deepen the sky, if needed
- try out curves masks on individual areas, if needed
- curves again, if needed
- bump saturation, if needed
- USM (masked if needed)
- save as.. TIFF action (F8)
- resize/border/save as.. action (F9)
