What processor would you choose?

Hey folks,

I've had a half built machine sitting in my office for a couple of months now waiting on the Bulldozer processors coming out but I'm not sure whether it's worth waiting so I wanted to ask your opinions.

So far the build is this:

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX AMD

Memory: Corsair XMS3 16GB DDR3

Processor: None

Graphis Card: None

Case: HAF X

Cooling: Coolermaster V10

HDs: 1 SSD 2 Hybrids and a 1tb sata 3

This machine is built for gaming and I'm looking for fast loads and great performance. I've made an identical postin the Graphics card section to enquire about the best card for the build but I'm interested to know what you guys would put in this processor wise. Would you wait for the BD or would you put something else in? What's going to get the most out of this build?

I had no idea there was a definite date!!!

I have been waiting on BD for a while. But I am concerned that the top of the line model won't be out and that i'll be faced with buying something that actually isn't as good as some of the intel processors.

What do you think?

If you are not sure about the wait and you want a good all round cpu, then go for the 1090Tx6 Phenom. They overclock well and will work well with your Mobo.
If you do not mind waiting then hang out to see what zambezi has to offer in a couple of weeks.

Are you guys serious? OP - I would wait until BD is out and then re-evaluate your options.

I seriously doubt that a 955 will retain 60% of its value when BD is out.

You are not alone,I have a half built PC as well and my old socket 939 PC is showing its age, personally wait until next month for BD and then you can make a decision on which way to go,that's what I'm going to do.

given it's been lying around for a couple of months, it's safe to assume you have another rig which you have been using in the meantime. surely then, you can just keep waiting for 2 more weeks given you've already waited several months? it doesn't make sense to sink money into a CPU which you're only going to use for 2-3 weeks.

No I've not got any other Rig just my laptop! Can you imagine the urges I've had to fight in order to avoid buying a temp GPU.

Well here is the deal, I'm very happy with my rig and I want to top it off with a very good GPU. I want it to be good for gaming obviously.

However, I've been waiting so long for the BD (like everyone else) and by the sounds of it there isn't even any guarentee that when some BD launch that the top end ones will be available. They may start with lower end ones and it won't be until 2012 until we see the real beasts. If this is true then I'd end up buying an inferior processor to ones currently out.

So with my build specs in mind (Sabertooth mobo), what is the best processor to go for in terms of gaming performance that is out now?

Or is the majorities opinion that in early october some pretty interesting BDs will be out?

My inclination would still be a phenom II 4 core BE as this could be overclocked to 3.8 - 4.2 GHz and would not bottleneck a GPU. Most current games are OK with 4 cores and there is little if any gain going to six cores.

Resale value may not be high but there is a strong AM3 market still and I believe that you would sell a 4 core for a marginally better percentage on new than the 6 core where the cost new is greater.

I think in october some pretty good BD's wil be out. Whether you want to wait a bit longer for all the wrinkles to be ironed out, but I am optimistic myself.

How about the cheapest AM3 Sempron/Athlon you can find and then keeping the money for a Bulldozer chip?

Half of me just wants to get my PC up and running, the other half wants a kick ass processor in it.

But I see little point in setting my PC up knowing I'm putting a standard processor in it.

If I was going to buy a processor now with the intention of it being the best I can get surely it would be

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-304-AM

But they are roughly £130 and I'm sure I've heard rumours of the BDs being £180. So it seems so pointless to buy that now so I can game knowing in a few weeks that there's something better out for not much more. Or is there a better processor I could put in my rig than the 3.7ghz Black Phenom II

You are cruel Alex, very, very cruel.

I don't mind biting my tongue and waiting but it's the not knowing, it could be the end of October!

What did you decide to do in the end / ?

ok so FX is here how do you feel whats going through your mind ?
