would you get it if you dont upgrade it..till like every 2-3 years?

i was thinking Conroe, but looking at some of the AMD X2...they look even more temping, and i could even get better monitor/graphics if i got one..

Ideas?

All depends on what you are going to use the machine for really.

I guess you'd want maximum grunt to last you that long, in which case I'd go for a Conroe.

if its gaming and your on a budget, then go for a cheaper a64 dual core + high end graphics card.
If its anything else and gaming isnt as important than conroe+ any card you want.
If you want all-out, then conroe is your only choice. conroe+high end card = win.

Well as i dont upgrade all that often i wouldnt want to spend that much, and wait for DX10..and upgrade more again then...

I use it for Gaming, General Use..

Im thinking towards:

X2 4600
Mobo - Not Sure On
X1800 XT/X1900 XT or something
Monitor - 19"+
RAM 2GB GEIL
HD 160GB Samsung

How fast is the 4600?

I want the machine to last upto 2 years (will be upgrading graphics and mobo/cpu when better conroe/dx10 stuff comes out)

Also for it to run Vista, when it comes out

Any ideas?

What would you guys get?

AMD X2 3800+
AMD X2 4200 +
AMD X2 4600+
AMD 64 3700SD
AMD 64 4000+

Its going to be used for gaming, multitasking and hopefully for vista and the latest games till the DX10/More Conroe time..so hopefully last 2 years.

I was thinking the X2 4600 as i will not be overclocking. Not straight away...thats for sure :)

Any of the X2s would do just fine. There's not a lot of software on the market these days that the average person uses which is CPU limited.

Jesus loves you but only if you buy AMD.

But does the new AM2 sockets eg. 4600 even compare to Conroe anymore?

I want the rig to be as cheap as possible and the X2 rigs look...tempting but then the Conroe cpu's are a similar price, just slightly extra and im tempted to get the E6600/E6400 now...

Gah :(

look at it this way, youl never use all the power a conroe can give you and you can build yourself a good AM2 platform for the money. i dont know if ethical purchase ever comes into your equation when buying stuff but if it does, AMD would be the one to go with for this reason also. just think of them as the "Fair Trade" of the CPU world.

Ok, decided AMD is the way for me :)

I've heard the X2 4600 is about equal to the X2 4400?

I'll be using it for COD2..BF2 etc and multi-tasking..

Does the X2 4600 sound good for that?

X2 4600 should be more than enough for what you need.
