What programs and situations actually use 8 cores?

Just wondering on the actual benefit of 6+ cores (e.g. Ryzen).
Obviously not 99% of games. But when do you actually get benefit of 8 cores? Chrome? Excel? Powerpoint? Power Director?

When would you see a benefit.

If you are running virtual machines it is useful to have some cores dedicated to the host OS as well as each active VM.

I use a few compilers/encoders that can effectively load up almost any number of threads also.

Anything Encoding, Compressing, Encrypting and Rendering. pretty much everything productivity related.
