Hi guys,

My PSU just blew up, so I'm in need of a replacement.

My machine -
blown psu - CoolerMaster GX550W (its plain black and says ATX 12v v2.31 on it)
amd phenom II X4 955 be (overclocked)
gtx 460
4gig ram
i think its a gigabyte mobo (it says ATX by the main power connector and 'ATX 12v' by the smaller connector (by the cpu))

Do i just need an ATX PSU? is there anything else i should look out for?

and of course i understand i want a good quality one thats suitably powerful.

*EDIT* this is my motherboard - Gigabyte AM3 880GMA-UD2H Rev 2.0 Sata III and USB 3.0
It has one of those power connectors where you have an extra 4 pin (2x2) in the same place as the main mobo connection, does this mean i need a specific psu?

This will help you decide on how much power you use - http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Fill it in, a very useful tool. Then buy a good PSU within that range of power that you need. Don't skimp on it though. You don't want to under power your system, but you also don't want to over power it either (wasting money/electricity bill).

How long have you had the PSU? Is it still under warranty? Was it the system overclock that cause the CPU to blow, or is it just "old"?

Another thing to consider, is upgrades. If you plan to upgrade in the future, it maybe worthwhile slightly overpowering the system (not massively like 200w more, but maybe another 100w). If you are happy with your system, and no major upgrades/additions are planned, then go with what the calculator says.

The type of PSU you need makes no difference if your board is ATX or not. The ATX is just he board size and layout really.

Awesome!
Thanks so much dude :)

yeh it was old and beyond warranty sadly. That's great advice cheers.
I need a 550w apparently!

Ive seen a Corsair gs600 in my local shop, and as much as I like to support OCUK I need it asap for work.

Do you think that's an ok one? It seems so
It has:
600w
Atx 2.3
3 year warranty
80+ efficiency

what do you think? Thanks again :)

The way I do psu for my build is find what the pc needs then add 100w on top just to be safe. I recommend you get 650w. The one you linked is fine but if they have the 650w get that.

He doesn't need nowhere near 650W. My rig pumps 430W, at the plug, with furmark AND prime95, and it's more demanding than his (560ti, [email protected]).

The Corsair GS should be fine. It's made by CWT (like 75% of the corsairs), 48A on 12V (576W).

But personally, I would take the Antec TP-550W, £59, or the Antec-TP650, £69, for SLI 460.
