Hi ALL,

I'm revamping an oldish server that ran 5 x 80 Gb IDE HDs in RAID 5 to now run 6 x 500Gb Seagate 7200.9 hard drives in raid 5 (on a Promise SX6000 6 channel caching raid card) plus a pair of 80Gb HDs mirrored for the system drive on the motherbards onboard Promise RAID. The Mboard is an intel server board running a P4 1.8 Ghz with 1Gb RAM and onboard rage XL gfx.

I noticed whilst building it, that the existing PSU is a delta 300 Watt and I decided it needs a more butch power supply, qusetion is how much power do 8 hard drives and a 1.8 Ghz P4 draw? Being used to speccing for high powered gfx cards and overclocked CPUs i have a feeling that its not going to draw more than 400Watts but I'm unsure...

any help apreciated,

Thanks,

E-I

That's a really good calculator. Pity I don't really know what some of the terms mean.
What terms would you like to know about? Education and assistance is why this forum exists.

EDIT: Hmmm. I did my machine on it and it says I need 578W. I currently have a FSP Sparkle 550W EPS12V power supply in my main rig. On my UPS there is a load indicator and out of five lights I almost never get past three. Might this calculator be a bit overzealous?

EDIT2: The main spec (as it relates to the claculator) is:
Dual Processor
Intel Xeon LV 1600 MHz Prestonia
100% Utilization (since I run Folding@Home on it, CPU use is nearly always at 100%)

Overclock:
Stock speed: 1600 MHz
Stock vCore: 1.3V
Overclocked CPU speed:3280 MHz
Overclocked vCore: 1.6V

RAM: 4 Sticks DDR SDRAM
Video: Radeon 9100 AGP 4x Single Card
IDE hard disk: 1x 7200 RPM
Optical Drives: 2x DVD-RW / DVD+RW Drive

PSU Utilization:100%
Capacitor Aging: 30% (It will run at 100% 24/7 until it fails or I die, whichever comes first.)

1x Sound Blaster - All Models
1x Additional card (WLAN)
USB Devices:5
Firewire devices:1
2x 80mm fans
4x 120mm fans
