Hi All,

My Antec Truepower 550 seems not to be enough for my core 2 quad and 8800gts!

Can you recommend a good one for me to get?

Thanks

What do you mean not enough, are you getting problems?

That should be plenty of wattage to be honest.

Erm if he can't power his kit with a 550W PSU - then how is recommending him a 520W one going to help?

What ever the problem he is having a Corsair HX 520 will be able to cope with a Quad Core, 8800GTX, 4GB of Memory and quite a few Hard Disk Drives so it will be fine for hes system. :)

Most of the power used is from the +12v rail, the rest is negligable.

The Antec can supply a max of 30A @ 12V
The Corsair HX 520 a max of 40A @ 12V

So the Corsair is a more effective unit.

Personally though, I went for the HX 620 which can deliver 50A @ 12V as I figure that will cope with rising power demands for a little longer.

corsair 520 will be more than enough, with new hardware such as the new gfx card refreshes comming out, power consumption will be dropping loads, and even newer cpus will be doing power drops, like the quad core 0 stepping did recently.
its like a yoyo, power requirements go up, then down then back up then back down.

But I was sure that my Antec TruePower 550 would be able to handle the core 2 quad 6600 and the 8800 Gts :(

my power supply is between 420-480 cant remember the exact amount...550 should be more than enough

DublinDude what exactly are your problems, your not telling us much. :)

Trying to set up my new build! When I first started it up there was a loud high pitched continuous beep so I powered off quickly! I then attached the psu cable to the 8800gts and the beep went but it whole thing shut down and restarted itself after a few secs and then it would power off completely after 20 secs.

It could be a loose cpu fan or the cmos needs clearing or something but somebody suggested it was my psu! I am not certain!

Do you have a d-bracket supplied with your machine? That should tell you the exact problem or at least show you what it's doing before it turns off.

I remember seeing a PC Power and Cooling PSU at a competitor with a huge ampage on the 12v rail, though it was just a 600W PSU, something like 60a or 90a, cheaper than the Corsair HX620.

Sucks I forgot what competitor it was eh? :P

The problem arises with overclocking.

Although a quad may be rated at 120w, by the time you've clocked to 3.6 Ghz and upped the volts combined with potential multi GPU's whether single card or muliple card you actual power usage can be high.

I had the same issue a few years ago with an Enermax 365 or 465 PSU. I got the 465 and it's still going strong with an OC'd DC opteron and a pair of 7900GT's.

The Antec TruePower 550 in my spare pc went pop on friday, so I ordered a Corsair 620W as it's always being highly recommended in here. Will take the OCZ Powerstream 520 out of my main pc to put in the spare, then put the Corsair in my main pc. :)

The Antec was powering a X2 4400, 7800GT, NF4 SLI-DR all @ stock, & 4 HDs.

I love the smell of a popped psu.
