hey fellas first time poster here, (but not a total noob)

im pricing a new system and am really stuck on what psu will be decent to fire the bad boy up!

heres what setup i have chose/want, i think it best reflects value per pound with very good gaming in mind.

2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS3 Dominator DDR3, PC3-12800 (1600), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9, DHX (sadly not from OC)

also my own WD raptor drive 160gb, and 2 optical drives. IMO not a very heavy consumption system (i5 being quite low and single GPU) but i have no way of knowing what size psu. i dont wat to go way over what i need, as you can see i have chose the 400W corsair i think that will be ample but i'd like more opinions

thanks

dave

I agree with mark, the 550W corsair specifically is a great one to go for.

As for your i5 spec, why only 2GB of RAM? To unlock the power of that system you really should be looking to 4GB.

i am only going for the 2gb atm because of cost constraints( for the time being), that said 2gb of dominator ram for £50 quid aint half bad, i plan to get the other 2gb in january, i did look at the ocz PSU and think its a winner for the stats it provides for only £60.

thanks for confirming my suspicions

If you are already spending £50 on RAM, then I suggest stumping up the extra £17 and getting this stuff. In terms of performance it will perform identically to the Dominator stuff, It just won't overclock as well - which doesn't matter.

i am planning to overclock the i5 to around 4Ghz which is very doable on air system and am a bit wary of not using corsair gear as thats all i have ever used in the past to great effect

dont laugh but ATM im running pentium D 2.60Ghz @ 3.75ghz and have been for the past 3 years on corsair ram and its solid (although very slow now but wasnt in its time), very old indeed.

I understand your loyalty to corsair, but in this situation you will be chosing loyalty over performance - the OCZ RAM I linked to will happily work with a 4GHz i5 system - with i5 tech you actually don't need to overclock the RAM to accommodate the CPU overclock.

If you feel compelled to stick with cosair, then get this stuff instead of the 2GB dominator.
