What PSU these days?

Hey guys,

Been out of the market for a while... And it's a sad day. Just built new rig and reused my Tagan 800 bz which was the bees knees a few years ago...

The old machine kept disconnecting drives and acting weird. Today in BIOS I noticed 12v rail firing out 11.2v and thought hmm.

Loe and behold, new rig just turned off while gaming and triggered surge protection on motherboard... Alas the beast is gone.

Who am I looking at these days for reliable power supplies? I have 800w now, but looking to run 4790k, 980ti and 6 hard drives.

Quite surprised looks like everyones died since last time I bought PSU... Enermax, Tagan etc all vanished.

I've done some load testing this morning with HWMonitor... and think my worries are now verified

5V Rail - Min 4.680 / Max 5.080
3.3V Rail - Min 3.328 / Max 3.344
12V Rail - Min 10.848 / Max 12.096
VIN3 - Min 0.832 / Max 0.856
VIN4 - Min 0.016 / Max 1.312

CPU Temp Max - 73C
GPU Temp Max - 79C

Not worried about CPU temp, using intel stock cooler at the moment, thought my 620 Kuhler would work but don't have the brackets, so getting replacement over.

Software is not very accurate when it comes to voltages but that doesn't look too good. A multimeter is the best way to test.

A 650w psu is more than capable of powering your pc. Even allowing for overclocks I doubt if you would pull much more than 400-420w at the wall. Have a look at these:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £480.55
(includes shipping: £12.60)

The EVGA GS 650w is a Seasonic built unit and is compact at only 150x150mm. It only has a 5 year warranty though compared to the 7 years (G2 650w) and 10 years of the Superflower built units. The G2 and P2 units are built by Superflower and based on their own Leadex Gold and Platinum units but have no bright led's and a longer warranty. The Platinum rated P2 750 seems to be extremely good value at only £8 more than the Gold rated G2 750w.

Yeah more than know about software, unfortunately my multi meter is back in London. I've got a Z97-A which has specific tools for drawing voltages etc, which gives me confidence perhaps these values are close to real, additionally in BIOS the 12v rail is sitting at ~11.6 which is worryingly close to the 5% standard.

I think I'm going to grab this - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/evga...plus-gold-modular-power-supply-ca-012-ea.html

10 year warranty is fab, and likelihood is that it will die within that period, so it's basically buy once deal.

Big shame because the Tagan BW800W was a really nice PSU, cables a bit bulky though!

The warranty and quality of their oem's is why we keep recommending EVGA. They are usually cheaper than the Superflower equivalent too. They are also opening a UK service centre in December which is excellent news.

Not tempted by the P2 750w at only £104.99 this week? The G2 is a excellent unit but a Platinum 750w at £105 is a steal.

Like I said in your own thread, the EVGA Supernova GS series is what I recommended for you. It's compact at 150x150mm (the G2 is 165mm long), fully modular and has hybrid fan control. The only problem is that OCUK only has the GS 650w in stock but if you shop around you can also find the GS550w in stock elsewhere (it has a ETA on here for mid November). Apart from going SFX which you don't want, you will be hard pressed to find a decent fully modular unit that's much smaller.

Yea, thanks. I bought a PSU for myself, a Bequiet and it is superb! Looking for one for my brother in law. He wants a 650w+

I did tell him about evga but he had problems with one some time ago and doesn't want to go there again! Told him that can happen with any PSU. (Wasn't the ones you mention above as he had his for a long time before it died!)

He has seen my BeQuiet but thinks it was too cheap! lol £50 approx

Loads of good PSUs these days. They usually share a lot of their designs (Either Seasonic, Leadex, Delta). I have an EVGA, the external quality isn't quite up to a Seasonic / Corsair of old), but it's more about the internals and the design (they are Seasonic Inside). Some EVGA are Leadex rather than Seasonic (like the GS), but in general, either design, all good. BeQuiet, Fractal Newton, Enermax, also good stuff.

Anything made by Seasonic or SuperFlower are the only power supplies I would bother with.
