What PSU?

hi, i got a 9800GTX+ for xmas and to my horror it didnt come with any 6pin PCI-E adaptors and my cheap psu doesnt have one, or even enough molex connectors to use adaptors, as the card requires 2x6pin PCI-E power.

so basically, i dont want to spend a fortune, but i also dont want to buy something that will cause problems.

my system currently is :

but obviously the 9500GT will be swapped out for the 9800GTX+. the other slight problem is the card is a tad long for my case, but i can cut the HDD bracked to make it fit, but if there is a case with a decent psu that isnt too expensive that will fit my 9800GTX+ and atleast 3 3.5" HDDs then would consider that too.

sorry for such a long winded post.

also, have noticed this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=ca-191-cm&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat= but there is not much info on psu, also, would it be deep enough to take the 9800gtx+?

i wouldn't recommend getting that psu+case deal. the psu used is rather in-efficient and doesn't get a good write up.

personally, i would suggest this psu. Here is a review, bear in mind that for your C2Q, 9800GTX+ rig a 450W high quality PSU is more than enough.

Though spending more on a higher power, more expensive (and similarly high quality) PSU is not a bad idea, as it will likely run more efficently, give you more upgrade headroom and likely a longer warranty. But this will obviously require spending more money, for your current needs the VX 450W is perfectly sufficient.

If you are looking for a nice new case that can fit a 9800GTX+, this is a good choice.

cheers, does that psu definatly have the 2 6pin PCI-E plugs? and is it better than the 500w OCZ?

was looking at that case, but wasnt sure if it would fit as nowhere gives internal measurements :( mine is a nice case, but the HDD mounting section is about an inch too close to the mobo so the card dont fit :(

My apologies, the VX 450W only has one PCI-E cable. With this in mind, this or this would be my recommendations - both have enough connectors. However, you could use the vx450 and connect the other PCI-E via molex - its got plenty of power on the 12V rail.

The Antec 300 case will fit a 9800GTX+. Here is a picture of an Antec 300 with a 9800GX2 inside (same length as the 9800GTX+ at 10.5 inches):

Its reasonably close - but it definitely does fit.

ok cheers for that, might look at getting a PSU for now and chopping my case and save for a nicer one when i can get my mobo (santa didnt give me enough for everything :() as i dont wanna keep taking everthing in and out as this increases the chances of something breaking.

with the second PSU list, what does
- 1 x 6 pin and 1 x 8 (6+2) pin PCI-E graphics card connectors for TP-550
- 2 x 6 pin and 2 x 8 (6+2) pin PCI-E graphics card connectors for TP-650, TP-750 and - Industrial grade protection
mean?

It means that the 550W Antec True power (TP-550) will have 1 x 6 pin PCI-E and 1 x 8 pin PCI-E. This is absolutely fine as the 8 pin is actually a 6+2 pin so can be used with a graphics card that needs 2 x 6 pin PCI-E connectors.

ah right ok cheers, that falls into the price bracket i was thinking of so looks like a safe bet, saves me worrying about my evo labs one going pop. would a better psu mean a more stable overclock?

also does the antec psu have that extra thing for the P5Q mobo if i get one (you know the normal 4 pin cpu power which is 8 pin on the P5Q i think) not sure its name

Looks like it does indeed have a 8pin 12v connector as well as a 4 pin one.

A better PSU can make for a better overclock - but for me it is mainly about reliability. Antec tend to make reliable power supplies.

kool cheers, 9xsata and 9xmolex, thats pretty awesome :D yeah realiabilty is what im after, which is why i will leave the mobo/case for now so i dont try and get everything on a budget and find it keeps falling over.
