What PSU?

Hi all,

I upgraded my system last year, but kept my old PSU. Now the PSU is making a smell I don't like much (hot/burning) and I think it's time for a new one.

My build is this:

Intel i7-920 Nehalem core (2.66 GHz)
GeForce GTX 260 896MB
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Intel X58
Corsair 3GB DDR3

My current PSU is a Hiper Type-R 580MW Modular (which has been slagged on here previously but I did buy according to advice obtained on the forum!)

Will one of the £80 PSUs be enough? (Would like a new monitor too!)

I had the same Hiper Type-R 580MW and it went bang. However its replacement from Hiper (under warranty) has had no problems, in my second system.

I'm currenly using a Corsair 650W psu (around £80-£90ish) and its been flawless.

I got an OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Power Supply this week and think it's fantastic - really quiet, almost silent. Obviously you'd need a more powerful version (they do 600w and 700w versions) so might be worth a look.

A hiper with a i7 are you mad?

I would recommend the TX 650W too.

Probably... I decided to keep a few of the old components to limit the initial spend. Has worked out OK considering, but I agree I should probably have spent the extra at the time.

Oh well, here goes.

Another Corsair vote. If you can afford it go for a HX, IMHO it is worth the extra £20ish as it makes your case look a lot more tidier. It is always worth getting a decent PSU as you don't want a cheap one taking the rest of your system with it when it goes bang!

OK, arrived today (along with a new monitor. How did that happen?) and installed.

Everything OK so far - except for the fact that the PSU is making a strange high pitched rhythmic ticking/chirping sound, almost like a cricket. I assume it's something to do with the fan. Anyone else have this?

How do you explain that to the missus?
"Sorry dear, my hand slipped and my finger hit the buy button of the monitor I wan't interested in buying."

Good luck.:p
