Hi,

This is my build:
i5 2500k
Mb - U/K
8gb Ram
6950 gpu may Crossfire in a few months
Corsair 650d
1tb HD
Noctua Nh-D14
Samsung Blu Ray

What power do i need and how relevant is quality?

The Antec New Truepower is a good PSU but im not sure its suitable for CF.

Mine has become redundant as it wont run 2 x 5850s with a few HDDs and Fans, I'm waiting on delivery of an Antec High Current 900w now.

I would say go for atleast a 750w maybe even a 850w as your PSU will/should last you 5 years.

i'm pretty sure the 650W can cope with two 6950's:

Heavy overclocking would soon push that up so if overclocking the OP would be better with 750W available on the 12V rail so as to be running the PSU comfortably within the maximum output.
could overclocking really up the power consumption by 30%?

i know that the most you can increase the voltage by safely on my totally different card is by 10%, which in theory increases the power consumption by 10% (no idea what overclocking does to the amps though)

A heavily overclocked HD 6950 can use 75W more than a reference card at stock clocks. That's an extra 150W for 2 cards. See here.

Plus you should run a PSU well within it's maximum output for increased life and increased efficiency.

650watt is not enough and even a 750watt is cutting it fine. The power draw on my system is over 700watts and that is with only a small overclock.

Corsair HX 750W imo or similar that comes with a 7 year warranty or any other good brand with at least 60a + on the 12v rail. What I like about corsair rma is it's basically a no quibbles swap out for a brand new sealed unit with about a 1 week turn around even though you are looking at £18 + to rma to holland.Antec have a Uk based rma service I believe and I have heard nothing but good about them but not sure if they have a no quibbles swap for new sealed unit policy.

You are running an Amd machine, that's like comparing apples with lemons

550w would be find imo

Knock 10-15% off for the inefficiency of the PSU.

700W at the mains, which I assume is where you're measuring, means the PSU is outputting 595-630W.

Just go for a decent branded 850w, worse case scenario its overkill but will at least last the life of the warranty. Its better to pay an extra few £££ now than it is to buy a new PSU in a year or so when you upgrade.

But your using a power hungry AMD setup, Sandybridge are much more efficient.

Total i5 2500K power draw - 125.6W

Total 1090T - 167W
I am not disputing the fact that intel i5/i7 are less power hungry than the AMD 125W Phenoms, what i am trying to get across is with twin mid to high end GPU's drawing around the 500w mark power draw, a 650 w PSU leaves none if any headroom for much else.
A good 750w or for plenty of head room and future proofing a good qulity 800/850.
