any ideas of what i can get? i am after a phone with a qwerty keyboard, ideally a smartphone but not running the windows Os

Have just tried a nokia n97 mini, and as much as i like the phone, the signal is totally rubbish.

What can you guys reccomend me?

Motorola Milestone (Android Smartphone)

Nokia N900 (Maemo Smartphone)

Some form of Blackberry

I'd probably go for the Milestone.

With regards the N97 surely your network provider is more the issue and not the phone itself where the signal is concerned?

Don't get the N97. The software is pretty buggy and everyone I know who has bought it, regretted it.

Take a look at the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, X2 or X10 mini if you want a smaller phone or the Motorola Milestone.

The X1 and X2 are pretty old phones now but still worth a look.

X1 is a brilliant phone... but... if your just an average consumer then its not the phone for you - its for people who like to play and tweak to their hearts content. Also signal is a little naff on it and camera/video recording is a bit poor.

I wouldn't swap mine for anything tho - until a phone come out thats basically the same but fixes those issues.

X10 mini pro is probably worth a look tho.

I know as I have an X1 too but it can be very easy to use once you install SPB Mobile Shell. My phone is pretty much optimised and tweaked so its running sweet. ;)

Especially as I use remote desktop mobile a lot the high res resistive touchscreen rules... I haven't found a capacitive touchscreen that can even come close to how good the one on the X1 is.

Mines very stripped down basic windows style tho no fancy frontends - also have froyo 2.2 booting on it :D

If you're on a budget, I can recommend the Motorola Dext. They can be picked up new for £150. Similar processor to a G1 (only other choice for budget qwerty), but it has more RAM and is better built. Motoblur is good and helps correct for only having Android 1.5, and an update to 2.1 is coming any month now (leaked builds already out for the American version).

motorola milestone or wait for the new blackberry

why is x1 being mentioned when hes specifically said no windows ?

there might be more android qwerty phones soon if you can wait a bit ? what happened to the nexus two ?

Id Get a Nokia N900 if i were you!
i got one and haven't looked back!
Its instantly hackable. u can do anything on it, even mod the camera drivers to take HDR photos. and even overclock it! got mine at 900Mhz. it flys with the dedicated GPU and audio processor!
only thing that happened mine is i was drunk on holiday and was rough with the micro usb connector and managed to pull it out xD i need to get it fixed! using a wall charger to charge the batt at night, haha. does anyone know where to get a female micro usb connector? and anyone tht thinks they could fix this?
Thanks

Palm Pre+? It really is the multitasking king, if you have a look on youtube there's a video showing 50 apps open at once! (he only stopped at 50 because he'd opened everything on the phone!) :D

I'd recommend a Pre too. I have one, and find it nice an easy to type on despite having fat fingers! OS is a joy too

Apparently its not really much better than the original Milestone :(

(from what I could gather from their review anyway, I haven't read it in detail)

Well what do you expect? It's the same phone with a faster SoC. The original SoC was pretty damn fast already.

OMAP 3430 clocked at 550mhz vs OMAP 3640 at 1ghz.

The big reason why the original droid seemed so fast is because it packs a decent GPU. In fact its the same SGX530 in the Droid 1 and 2.

edit:

search by phone name or scroll down to find details in the page below
