Hi all,

I am about to buy a P6P87 motherboard upgrade and need some good RAM for it.
However I am slighty confused over which type in terms of 'channel'

Is my summary below correct:

Dual is (2 x 2 or 4GB.... etc) can be used on P6P87 mobo

and

Triple is (3 x 2 or 3GB.... etc) for X58 mobo's (specifically)

Am I right in thinking it is due to the amount of slots available on each board

I would like to get 2 x 4GB of corsair vengeance, is this too much or is too much never enough it terms of RAM

Many thanks in advance

Triple channel memory is ideally used in X58 motherboard with 9xx range of cpus which have triple channel controllers on.

You would need dual channel, one thing to watch is the memory voltage and the heatsinks on these may interfear with the larger cpu coolers.

Sandy Bridge is dual channel.

The number of channels is determined by the processor architecture where the memory controller is now built into the processor.

Just buy the cheapest 1600MHz dual channel RAM at the time you order.

Memory speed has little impact with Sandy Bridge.

If you plan on getting a large CPU cooler then you want RAM with low profile heat spreaders to avoid any interference.

4GB is generally enough for a gaming PC but with prices still being relatively cheap most people get 8GB.

If I was buying today I would get one of these:

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £45.59 on This Week Only.

Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £47.99 on This Week Only.

RAM pices are supposed to be increasing after the recent falls so get it while you can.

Thanks for info

What's important about the voltage (that sounds so lame by me... sorry)

I can see 1.5 or 1.65

Confused.... again

With Sandy Bridge you want RAM which runs at 1.5V (or close to it, or lower) as using higher can in theory damage the processor where the memory controller is located.

Both of the RAM kits I listed above will run at, or close to, 1.5V.
