What ram do I need?

are you just trying to talk me into buying your ram? haha

I don't use it for much at the minute but I'm hoping to start using it for editing and things soon. I watch a lot of films, talking like a few a day (I'm a screenwriter) and if they're in high def sometimes it can be a bit choppy, will the ram make a difference there?

Also I just notice that general use can sometimes slow down a bit and I'd just like to give it a bit of a boost, for the sake of 30 quid, or even 50 or 60 it's not worth me doing a complete format and stuff.

na I'm not doing that. I like this system, never had any issues with it and I'm saving up for a macbook so it'll be a while before I get a new PC.

I appreciate what you're saying but is that 32 quid difference noticeable?

Check this out.

They seem to think it's worth it, but that was back in the day when they didn't have terabytes of storage! lol

There's the stats anyway, if you feel that it's worth it then go for it.

Well for the HD stuff then I would look at what video card (if any) is installed in your computer since that will play a big role in this.

Yes it is better but weigh that up against the cost of buying it, the list is a comparison between the two speeds of RAM and shows there is not much in the way of difference.

Just got it today, put it in (wrong) turned the computer on, got a beeping.

Turned it off put it in properly, turned back on all working.

BUT right, in my system page it says I only 3Gb of ram installed? What's up with that?

Do I have to do something to get it to use the other 1 or is it assigned to my graphics or something?

You need a 64 bit OS to recognise and utilise 4Gb of memory - i suspect you're running a 32 bit OS (vista?) and so it will only be able to address just over 3Gb (3.3ish).

Your system will still benefit form the extra ~1.3Gb that it will recognise - but if you want to utilise the full 4Gb you will have to update to a 64bit OS.

turned out it still wasn't in properly, that last slot sort of overlaps with the graphics card so it was hard to tell.

In now though and says 4Gb.

You are right though Plec I'm using 32bit Vista, is that true about not being able to use the full 4Gb?

Afraid so, CPU-z will recognise all that you have installed - and it appears all sticks are up and running. You may want to run memtest froma bootable ISO just to make sure - as you may need to tweak the NB voltages for stability purposes.

If you right click on MY Computer - you should see the amount of memory that is recognised in your system. It's should be aprox 3.3Gb - but as mentioned before you'll still benefit from the extra 1.3Gb that it does address.

no in the My Computer panel it says 4Gb.

I have no idea how to do any of that stuff you just said.

Odd, but if you suddenly see it drop to approx 3.3Gb in other screen don't be concerned - it's perfectly normal

The issue is that 32-bit Operating systems can address the 4Gb but some of the address space is used for graphics cards, page files etc, so the user usually see's only sees between 3 and 3.5 (depending on gfx) and won't be able to access the full 4gb in a 32 bit envonment.

Again, it's not a problem and you won't notice any real world difference in day to day usage.

As for the stability test that was just precautionary - but if you start experiencing BSODs post back and i'll explain what to download and how to ru it. Plus, what to change in the BIOS if required.

Bought 4Gb, cos I'm crazy.

Have fun in the MM Stoner81

Yeah will do thanks been looking round :D

The full 4GB will only be fully used under a x64 operating system.
