So what i want to know is what settings does everyone use in sony vegas pro 10 or windows live movie maker to come out with the best quality/size ratio for youtube.

GO.

edit: so far im using avc/aac with my custom settings which are:
1280 x 720
30fps
number of reference frames: 3 use deblocking filter
maximum bps: 5,120,000
average bps: 2,240,000

and that has come out with this
but i still think that is a bit blocky, which i dont like at all

In Vegas 10 I use 1280x720, MainConcept AAC/AVC mp4 codec with a VBR of 2000kbps min 8000kbps max.

Here's a quick vid I did of a SF Helicopter Assault mission I'm working on for Arma 2 (720p in fullscreen)

I find the WMV codec makes the videos a bit too "smoothed", but the transcoding youtube does can have an effect to.

Best is to practice with a 2min file coded using all the different codecs & settings to find a file size/image quality that suits you.

1280x720 Resolution.
I compress my files with x264vfw encoder. (You can also use Xvid coded but I find it gives a bigger file size but a tiny bit more quality)

Play around with bitrate on both encoders until you find a balance between filesize/quality.

This is something I made in After Effects as an example:

Main conecpt aac/avc MP4

1280x720

Number of refrence frames: 2 using deblocking filter.

Also disable resample

Constant bit rate 4,000,000.

Rememebr these video are quite long so it's important for me to keep a balance.

Is 60 FPS even supported by YouTube? I thought they were still using 30 (or 29.97)...

Depends on timescales for me. There's a balance to be had between quality and render/upload time and I live with marginally lower quality to make uploads actually worthwhile on my crappy sky 0.5 up connection.

currently using video -1280x720 h.264 2-pass VBR, 3-6mbps bitrate; audio - 128kbps 48khz, AAC format. That works out well for me and means I can render and upload a 30 minute video in about 3 hours give or take.

Is this with avi and stuff or sony avc or what?

It's H.264 format, which generates an MP4 video file. I use premiere here so not sure what options sony vegas has in all honesty. H.264 is one of the newer formats supposed to be a bit better for high definition viewing than say divX, it's also supposed to have slightly smaller end filesize. As to the accuracy of that, I'm just going by the developer site lol That was the recommended video type for youtube widescreen HD in premiere so I've just stuck with it.
