What res is full HD?

Morning all, just curious to know what resolution is classed as full HD? my current monitor is a 20" TFT with a max res of 1600x900 and i was thinking of upgrading to something a bit bigger but not sure what. Is there much difference between TFT & LCD?

Full HD is 1920x1080.

LCD is Liquid Crystal Display and TFT - Thin Film Transistor, they are basically the same thing.

Maybe you mean between LCD and Plasma? Or even LCD and LED?
 
LED is the type of backlighting, most LCD's use CCFL backlighting which can give a yellow tint over LEDs and use a lot more power
 
I'm not entirely sure of all the benefits of LED over LCD, but LED is a new technology and is favoured because it's brighter and clearer and use less power.

Pixel for pixel LCD & LED are the same really. Both will have the same resolution at the same size ie 24" LCD @1920x1200 will be the same as 24" LED @1920x1200

BTW Full HD is a term coined for TV's, monitors operate on a higher range.

Basically - 'TFT' describes the backplane of a monitor and it is something that most LCD monitors use (as indeed other technologies will in the future).

Most LED backlighting in affordable consumer monitors is achieved by replacing CCFL lamps with a border of LEDs around the inside of the monitor bezel. There are several attractive environmental benefits to this, including the elimination of mercury in the final product (allowing it to be dispoed of more safely/cleanly) and lower power consumption for a given brightness. LED backlighting also allows the manufacturer to achieve a higher peak luminance (brightness), if they desire, for a given screen size. There are also some 'minor' advantages such as no 'warmup time' - the CCFL backlight colour hue changes slightly for about 30 minutes, meaning that the colours on the screen will change slightly during this period. The whites are also considered more 'pure' due to the nature of LED backlighting and also 'flicker free' in theory. In practice dithering algorithms (i.e. how most LCD monitors display colours intermediate to those they can actually 'handle') can be a lot more distracting than any flicker as a direct result of the light. The main selling point for LED-backlit screens at the moment, other than power consumption, is that the screen can be made very thin and light.

1080P the great thing about this resolution is that you'll never never need much AA to produce smooth graphics

I disagree

especially as seeing in Crysis (well it's the only game they could test it on) to get the vegetation to not have aliasing along the edges they had to run it at 3840x2160 4xAA
 
But something like 360p is referred to as standard definition.

So going from standard definition to standard high definition doesn't sound right. In fact that'd be pretty confusing for people new to this game.

It's already pretty confusing - It's what happens when you leave product descriptions up to marketing!
