Hi Folks,

Wondering how i can get the best out of Crysis without making it unplayable. My set up is as follows:

Q6600 clocked at 3.42Ghz
G.Skill 4Gb clocked at 912mHZ
Abit IP35 Pro
ATI 4870 clocked to max in CCC 790Mhz GPU and 1100Mhz Memory

Ive been trying lots of variations with resolutions, details levels and AA, but wondering what people recommend to get the best out of it. Currently at 1600x1200, detail at high and AA set to Box 8x.

Still seems to be struggling to be smooth and i thought that it should be able to cope with this quite easily  Doesnt seem to have improved much since overclocking my CPU and RAM.

What should i be able to achieve with this setup? Any suggestions to improve things?

Many thanks in advance!

There are custom configs which help with its performance and even on occasion improve quality.

As for what res, that comes down to what frame rate you find acceptable, which is like asking someone what type of music they like. The general concensous though is that most find that they can bare a lower FPS in Crysis to other FPS games.

1680x1050 will be fine at Direct X 9 high - but don't bank on using any AA, it's too much of a performance hitter. Box 8xAA is way too much as well.

Ok, will try it without AA. Thought i'd read people using edge detect and then going down to box to improve things, hence tried the same. Will disable AA and see what improvements it makes :D Thanks!
Will also try 1680x1050 although im using DX10.

make an autoexec config with r_useedgeaa=2 (i think thats right) and it will look almost exactly the same as 2x fsaa or even better with a very small preformance hit.

Right, just switched off the AA in the CCC and the game, all was running great then all of a sudden i got white squares all over the screen. Restarted the game and the menu's were very slow so quit, and because windows was also having issues i restarted the PC.
Started up the game and then was getting red spots all over the place  Was fine last night with the AA all switched on, only diffence is the AA is off, surely that couldnt cause this problem?

After quiting the game, windows was really messed up, everything was black, then some icon would appear with mouse roll over. Task bar was transparent and start menu impossible to see. Had to shut down using task manager.

Sounds like your video card's memory is acting weirdly. Is it ok in other games with and without AA?

As for when you see people saying edge AA is better in Crysis, they don't mean edge AA from ATi's control panel - that's not it. That's still shoddy AA performance. You want all AA settings off in ATi's CCC panel, then in Crysis, open the console up and put in 'con_restricted 0' then 'r_useedgeaa 2'. Crysis uses its own method of edgeaa that has no performance impact at all.

In general, you never want to use CCC settings for AA, always try to use application-specific settings.

Will have to do abit of experimentation, but im abit puzzled. Maybe its the new drivers? Updated to 8.10 yesterday, but everyone else seems to be having no problems, and i wasnt yesterday.

I'm running the 8.10 drivers too and I'm having no issues. If all else fails do a reinstall of those drivers as well as the game :p

Well, lowered the CCC overclock and seemed stable until after 10-15 mins it crashed with a driver has stopped working error  This has happened in the past so guess i will just have to live with it. Will try experimenting alittle more :)

Thanks for everyones help

On drugs mate?

Prescription only :)
If you look here you can see that the 4870 only averages 45fps in 1280x1024 0xAA high settings (plus shaders on very high): http://www.anandtech.com/GalleryImage.aspx?id=3192 . That's a fair boost over 1920x1200 where it comes in at sub-30fps average. The minimum framerate is likely to be much lower, maybe around half or two thirds of the average at best. Obviously overclocked and with up to date drivers he'll get a tad higher but still not exactly smooth sailing.

I played the game in 1680x1050 0xAA high settings (a couple of things like shadows tweaked lower, motion blur disabled etC) on a GTX280, and it was slower than I'd like.

Meh was smooth enough on high 1680x1050 with my 8800gt, would think the 4870 would be more than enough.
