Currently have a Panasonic TH-42PX80B with an Xbox360 hooked up with an official VGA lead.

The only resolutions the TV won't let me select are 1280x720 (720p) and 1920x1080 (1080p) when I select either of these the screen just goes black and I have to wait for it to reset.

It will let me select all the other variants though, like the one I'm currently using which is 1280x768.

I thought the native output of the 360 was 720p?

I also have Sky HD+ and that's set to 720p and works perfectly on this TV.

Is it the cable??

Doubt it's the cable and the 360 is capable of it.

Sounds like the TV has some quirks with its VGA input?

Many screens will only accept the exact resolution (or multiples of, or something along those lines) of their screen over VGA, most 720p screens are actually 1280x768 hence why you can only select that resolution. When i connect my PC to my HDTV via VGA i have to use that resolution too, in terms of picture it's identical to 720p.

You won't get anything other than non-standard resolutions, it's a limitation of VGA on that set it seems. Not a bad thing though so don't panic.

It will let me watch Sky HD in 720p though (but that's using HDMI).

Just seems strange the only two resolutions it won't let me pick are the standard 720p and 1080p.

All the other options it will display fine:

1280x768
1280x1024
1360x768

As i say it's a limitation of VGA on some teles.

I thought VGA was just as good as HDMI... maybe not?

As I've been having a google trying to see if anyone else has had this problem it seems that some resolutions aren't selectable over HDMI, such as 1024x768.

Weird!

Ah well, I'll stick to the 1280x768 as it looks good anyway, cheers for help :)

The standards can handle the resolutions, it's just that the TV manufacturers make strange decisions when implementing their TVs!

VGA is the best analogue video cable, arguably as good as HDMI yes. The problem here isn't VGA though, its the way in which your television handles VGA, some will allow full 1080p through VGA and others won't. Fortunately as its on the xbox360 and not say, a blu-ray or HDDVD player, all that's happening in this situation is your HDTV will be upscaling the image instead of the scaler chip in the 360 (as only a handful of games are full 1080p on the 360, the rest are upscaled to that resolution by the chip). The end result is near identical.

Most are actually 1366*768 while most plasmas are 1024*768.

my Panny 32" 720p displays 1360x768 with 1:1 pixel mapping. (but it just leaves 6 columns black rather than trying to scale it) Which was nice :)

Although saying that the colour seemed better through component so i opted for that as the panny has a great scaler.

VGA ports on pannys will only let you select certain resolutions. Ive got the PZ85, highest i can select is 1366x768.

I wouldnt worry though, 1366x768 on an official VGA cable looks better than 1920x1080 on HDMI, the official VGA is the best picture you can get.

Ok, just had a look through thew manual for my panny TV. It recommends 1336 x 768 (also known as 'WXGA' apparently) or as close to it as possible as the optimal resolution for my tele.

your lucky you can get any signal with the VGA cable - I had to upgrade my 360 to an elite so I could use the HDMI connection! (I also have a panny 42" plasma -the 82B model)
