Hiya, which route would be quickest from Stratford to Slough?

My tomtom says I should get on the M25 and go all the way around London then join the M4 at Junction 4b towards Slough. This is 60 Miles according to Google maps.

I say, Instead of taking the M25 all the way around London, I should just take the A406 through London and then get on the M4 at junction 2. This is only 38 miles.

What should I do, considering I'm leaving at 6PM on Saturday, which one will be quicker?

Thanks for the reply.

I forgot to say the original TomTom route was telling me to go straight through central London on the A4. It's only telling me to take the M25 because I told it I don't want to pay congestion charge.

Does anyone know if the A406 has a congestion charge?

would you pay CC at 6pm on a sat? thought it was only a weekday thing.
though the time and fuel cost difference might make it worth paying CC?

For 6pm on a Saturday I would risk NC to Hanger Lane up the A40 to the A312 and down to the M4. This avoids the single lane section from A40 to M4.

However, having lived in Ilford and travelled to Slough 2 or 3 times a year, quite frankly I wouldn't bother :D

Hanger Lane can be a truly horrific experience (that ridiculously awful roundabout monstrosity). I tried the direct route to Slough and ended up going via the A3 because of a bad experience at Hanger Lane. Still gives me the shivers :(

You won't pay congestion charge on a Saturday.

Having said that 99% of the time you are going to be quicker going around the M25 so I'd do that route. I live in zone 3 in SE London and it takes me an age to get out to the M25, yet it is still sometimes quicker than going certain routes through town if I need to be the opposite side.

I will go entirely against the flow of the advice here, i work in east london a fair amount, even at peak time the quickest route is simply to plough through A40>A501.

The M25 *might* be quicker if its clear all the way and you can thrash it round, but 90% of the time it isnt worth bothering with.

CC doesnt operate on a weekend, and even so the inner ring road (A501 etc) does not enter the CC zone anyway.

Go on the London ring road A501 (North) from Aldgate East -> A40 -> M40 -> M25 -> M4

Or skip the A40 and get A4 -> M4

+1

Just dont go, horrible place Slough.

Agreed, however, there is a krispy kreme shop under tescos which makes up for some of the bad things in Slough.
Talking of that tescos, it's the only one I've seen with those car park lights!

99% of the time quickest is not the shortest route. listen to tomtom
HAHAHAHAHA London at its best :D

Though in this case the A406 will probably be the quicker route. It'll be a bit busy near the A1 and the little stretch from the A40 round to the A4.

DJ Jestar's suggestion is a good route late at night but it'll be chokka on a Saturday evening. On the times I go up there for the Chelsea Cruise it's solid around that time on a Saturday.

Yeah, my suggested is route is a stinker if Chelsea are at home. But then, so is the whole area from West Brompton to White City. It's not horrific (well, no more so than everywhere else) on Saturday evenings :)

Is there an echo in here :p Definitely the best route, i do it a lot :)

Yeh sorry, had to find the name of the ring road, I just followed the 'R' as I didn't know its official name and by the time I pressed submit you had it in the bag :)
