Basically at uni accom. Want to share a connection between 3 of us. 1 Ethernet port in room which carries the Internet signal. Want to plug this ethernet into a router and then provide a wireless signal to everyone in the flat. Which router should I buy?? Cheapest solid performer for needs please

If you want a FAST router I cannot recommend the ASUS RT-N56U enough.

For £99 it is fantastic value and has a wealth of features which in my opinion elevate it over the competition. It is fast, good-looking and flexible. Moreover, it has concurrent 2.4Ghz/5Ghz wireless and 2x USBs for external HD/printer sharing.

Notice too that it tops their charts of throughput (often outperforming routers twice the price).

The only negative I have found on this model is the lack of an inbuilt modem. This will not affect you now (as your uni is simply piping their internet to you over ethernet) but maybe when you move out of halls and into your own place you will want a modem for ADSL connectivity (I would recommend the Draytek Vigor 120).

Also, make sure to use the 1.0.1.2 firmware on the ASUS RT-N56U as any later and it drops connection every so often. We are all waiting for ASUS to fix this with a new firmware revision but you won't be missing out on much by using this older version.

I have the router and is the best I have ever owned. Took me AGES to decide on one too.

Others will probably recommend Billion 7800n (which I think would be overkill for you), Netgear WNDR3700 (which is unstable and would not stop dropping connection when I had it a week ago) and the ageing Netgear DG834GT (which I have owned for the past 3 years and lacks the features of the ASUS). Also, possibly the Apple AirPort Extreme but this last one is overpriced, lacks a web interface and is not that quick at wireless connectivity (look at benchies on smallnetbuilder).

Hope this helps!

Tom

I don't know about your university policy but they are usually against people plugging in switches or other personal networking equipment, you may find they come and shut you down - at least they did that to me!
