Hi folks,
well it's been a good half decade since I had to do anything with my network and I'm well out of the loop.
Can you please send me in the right derction of routers. My netgear is doing my head in as I have to keep resetting it as it drops the connetions :(
I have 2 wired pc's and about 6 wireless pc's using my network. My Internet connection is virgin cable.
I have had experiences with both linksys and netgear but I reckon any knowledge I have of them is obsolete by now.

So what do you suggest guys?

Thanks

Assuming you don't need 50mbps throughput (though some people report this router handles it), wireless N or gigabit LAN, then a WRT54GL is the best choice. Rock solid and well featured thanks to custom firmware like Tomato and DD-WRT.

Wow these are still for sale? I think I still have one with a bad firmware update with dd-wrt and is now a paper weight :(
I don't mind spending a little more so I can future proof myself slightly.
Any other suggestions?
Are you guys sayin linksys is still a top brand?

Thanks

There are no top brands, it's just one decent device amongst a plethora of crap ones. I'm a router snob though :o)

There's a WRT160NL which claims to run linux and does 802.11n but doesn't have a gigabit switch built in. I have no idea how good it is though; I imagine Tomato won't support it but DD-WRT probably does (it'll likely be based on a WRT160N version; IIRC the v1.* ones weren't bad).

From what i've gathered, having a WRT54GL with Tomato/DD-WRT would be the best bet.

Otherwise it's a total minefield.

I would go for the WNDR3700, its currently the overall best router available. Check out smallnetbuilders review:

Previously the best was between linksys wrt610n and dlink 825, but the wndr3700 trumps them both. I have one myself, runs well and keeps a decent temperature.

I'm afraid to say with the couple of netgear routers I have had they seem to have left a nasty taste in my mouth. Don't think i will be doing Netgear for a while yet.

Well Guys,
It's amazing what you can do when you have a couple of hours to play with :)
Finally had time to sit down and play with my old wrt54gl. It had a bad firmware update with dd-wrt on it. Well I say bad firmware what I mean is user error :) I finally managed to connect to it and get Tomato installed. I am really impressed with it and so much so I ordered another one so I can link them and see if it's a good soloution to my bad signal problem :)

Again thanks for the replys.
