Quick question.

What routers are AOL sending out to customers at the moment?.

A mate wants me to go round to his sisters and set up a wireless network for her and she has just signed up with AOL. She got her letter this morning saying her line was now activated and received her router etc last Monday.

Now, the last time I heard, AOL were sending out Netgear DG834's but my mate said although he didn't know what type of router it was, it was black ( which DG834's aren't ) and it had some sort of little antennae coming out of the back of it.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?.

I know setting up routers is much of a muchness but I just wanted to be "fore-armed" with a bit of info before I pop over tomorrow and set the thing up.

Thanks for any help.

Well, just got back from the house and encountered the same thing I had the last time there was a problem setting up AOL broadband for a new customer.

Despite a letter being sent out telling her the broadband was now activated on the line - it wasn't.

They put her on hold for about 20 minutes and came back with the answer that "there is a problem with your line that will be fixed within 24-36 hours".

When we started setting everything up, there was no "DSL" light illuminating on the router and straight away I wondered if indeed, the line had been activated as I've had this a few times before with new AOL customers.

Looks like I might be right.

I cant understand why AOL persist in doing this - sending out letters stating quite emphatically that a customers broadband is now active when in some cases it's certainly anything but.

Just seems daft to me.:p

So she has to keep the router plugged in and check to see when the DSL light eventually appears on and then I'll nip back round and try setting her up again.

Here's a thing though, for those who have the Speedtouch 585 routers.

I know with the previous router that AOL sent out ( Netgear DG834's ) that typing in http://192.168.0.1 got you into the router settings via IE, but I couldn't access the Speedtouch router settings by typing in http://speedtouch.lan as it tells you to do on the AOL website. IE just sat there with a slow moving progress bar and "Connecting to site" showing.

Any ideas?. How do you get into the router settings on a Speedtouch 585?.

Hi

On the thomson try router admin is normally on 192.168.1.254 to configure just run the wizard remembering to change it from PPPoA to PPPoE as it is AOL
