What runs cooler?

I was just wondering really as I remember around 3-4 years ago people said AMD were better for gaming and it runs cooler..

I guess it wasn't true.

Some of the old P4 did run warm, I think it was the Prescot which they nick names presc-hot.

The Phenom II series aren't great if you want a quiet PC, they don't run amazingly hot (well the 140W 965s get quite warm) but those stock heatsinks really start to drive you crazy in the summer.

Best CPU to suggest really depends more on your budget than how hot they run though as you can always change the cooler.

4-6 years ago that was very much true - the Pentium 4 was trying to become a space-heater and the AMD 64 chips were top-notch for gaming.

However, since Intel Core 2 came out, intel CPUs have generally been better performing at the top-end.

As for temps, that is a mixed bag - the core 2s were reasonably cool, the phenom 1s were crazy hot, the i7s are super hot and the new Phenom 2s are not too bad.

the 42nm C2D run really cool as well, someone i know couldn't believe how cool they run compared to his Prescott which occasionally reached stupid temperatures! saying that, Northwood chips didn't look that hot, not cold but not hot either :)
