A friend has given me a batch of photos he'd like scanning in and saving.

I'm only after something basic as it probably won't be used much after this, certainly don't need all the negative print stuff etc.

Does it matter if I go and get the cheapest one I can find? I guess they all scan upto a decent resolution (will only be needing to save the photos at a maximum of say 1280px, and i'll be able to adjust the levels etc in Photoshop after...

Any makes/models recommended?

Cheers. :)

What are all-in-ones like as i've seen a few that are cheaper than a standalone scanner. Do they offer lower quality scanning?

The HP Deskjet F4280 is less than £50 and has wireless too which would be handy...

Who tend to be the cheapest for ink cartridges btw?

I paid £30 for a Canon LiDe 25 scanner last year. I just wanted something cheap as I found every so often I would need to scan something.

I cant really comment on photo scanning because I only scanned one picture (a baby photo of me), which I think came out well but the picture wasn't that great to start with.

I have never had an all in one either. I saw a Brother MFC-235C for about £50 yetsurday which looks very small, but is only USB unfortunatly. I know that the toner replacements for my brother mono laser are cheap but I dont know about inkjets.
