I'm building a new pc for the g/f this weekend using vista 64 home premium. What anti virus would you guys recomend? I've always used zonealarm free firewalls in the past and love it so will prolly stay with that. But i'm not sure on the anti virus, does vista have this protection already or is there any good free ones about that you'd recomend? I've used norton in the past i guess it does the job, i've not have much problems but i don't know about having to pay for it..

Thanks

Take a look at the following:

Avast
NOD32
AVG Free
Kaspersky

Personally, ive used AVG and it did the job. However, after trying out NOD32 i must say it is worth going with them. Very low on resources and has all the required features of a good Anti-virus. :)

Any good anti-virus you're going to have to pay for, really. BitDefender has served me very well. Don't bother with AVG, it's useless. I had a PC with AVG on (fully updated) and it missed 6 serious viruses. NOD32 seems to be very popular around here as well. (There's a 30-Day free trial on their website as well.) ;)

Ive tried Bitdefender 2008 and Kaspersky 7.0, and I reckon they are both absolutely brilliant. Tried the 30 day trial for each, and settled on Kaspersky because of its flexibility and it being less resourse hungry. MUCH better thAN AVG.

Kaspersky is more expensive on their website, but shop around and its much cheaper elsewhere.

AFAIK Zonealarm is not compatible with Vista x64. The Vista firewall is 2-way and provides adequate protection IMO.

Oh noooo, my beloved zonealarm:( Has done me proud for years that has! Will see how i get on with the vista one, thanks for the heads up! TBH i'm supprised that vista/xp don't have a decent anti virus utility, or maybe it does but it's clearly not good enough for most people to use??

Hmm actually, just checking the zonealarm site. It says it's available for vista, but doesn't mention 64bit, is that what you meen? Because if it does support it, it's not a bad price £30 for the hole lot! I'd defo buy this because there free firewall was top dolla:)
