I've done a bit of boxing, karate and kickboxing.
In my experience, the only ones which might be of use for "self defence" would be boxing & kickboxing. Karate is too focused on katas.
Things like Kung Fu, Aikido etc are next to worthless in a fight. Ju Jitsu might be a good bet though, joint manipulation can be pretty helpful in a scrap.
Also - running away is perfectly acceptable. Assuming you aren't fat. Generally someone pursuing you will give up before you tire.
