What self defence should I learn?

Depending on where you live and how much of an appendage a person is then self confidence and self discipline can be enough to discourage most bad guys without the need to escalate to gratuitous violence

Always fancied a crack at Krav Maga, but nowhere up here runs classes... Might try some boxing instead, a lot of folks seem to recommend it.

Indeed, and if you go for a rounded martial art, you also get the benefit of learning to use the opponent's weight to your advantage and alo learn to use your legs as well. And on top of that depending on the martial art, you may learn some simple Chinese/Japanese/Korean etc.

You learn that with Martial Arts too

There's a lot more faffing about though (at least from what I've seen) :p With boxing it's like: walk in, get punched in the face, "oh that wasn't so bad", walk out. You learn to deal with people trying to hit you hard in the face very quickly :D

I would have thought so. Learn to throw and take a punch properly and you're already more competent than 99% of guys.

lol - ive done boxing for over 6 years and even i know brazilian jiu jiutsu is the best form of martial art / self defence technique

seriously in a fight the only thing boxing will do is make you lose, have you ever seen a boxer in a street fight?

boxing is good for teaching you how to throw a punch and how to block / weave - thats about it, when it comes down to crunch time, anything can happen, hell i'd kick a guy in the nuts if i thought that was the easiest way to win, but usually i go for a punch to the throat

I did tae kwon do up until recently and was due my black belt grading soon, I ended up getting sick of it and joined a boxing club. Really enjoy that a lot more.

There is no one martial art that is the best, it comes down to the person using it.

The most successful fighter would be someone that has studied several different martial arts and can combine them all.

Punched with a big padded glove on. Try full contact fighting with just a thin padded glove, where legs, elbows, knee come into play.

Damn right :p

Oh yeah because in a street fight you really have the opportunity to be that accurate. Go out on a Friday night to your local town and watch a street fight, it's basically a slapping / grappling match or a big bundle. There's no real way to 'defend' against a ruck.

Unless it's 1-on-1 and you're being mugged in a side street I don't think any training is going to help, being a big Rhino-Freefaller-type would though.

Well that's part of why I don't think many of these 'martial arts defence' courses are worth it, if you get an elbow to the head with someones full force behind it, it's all over - no amount of training is going to help.

Actually thinking about it I don't think anything is going to help. Just don't get into street fights. It's not like you can't avoid them. Stop getting larger'd up every weekend and see how easy it is to stay out of trouble.

I was saying, Martial Arts are a con in terms of self defense, which is what this thread was asking about, and unless you do them quite seriousely they are absolutely useless, learning how to take a punch properly and deal one out, i.e boxing, is much more effective.

Martial Arts are fun, I've done Aikido, Karata and Judo, but for self defense they are not realy efficient, you realy need to be able to do it without thinking before you can apply them anywhere and be able to adapt them, which standing in front of someone slowly going through a move over and over does not teach.

If you want to learn self defense because you are worried about getting into a fight and being battered, knowing that if the guy puts his hand forward in a certain way and you are standing in exactly the right position then you can flip him over your shoulder then awesome, but fights don't usualy go the way you plan them to.

Fight dirty, kick a guy in the nuts then when he's down keep kicking.

Also yeah, I know my spelling is pretty dire.

I did jujitsu a while back which was pretty fun and interesting, and in one case I found it fairly useful. It's a fairly defensive martial art in that rather than in things like karate where you learn to strike, you learn to counter punches, kicks, people grabbing you and stuff and punish people for it with various throws, wristlocks, armlocks and such. I recall we did disarming people of knives (of course we just used wooden knives) and blunt objects, too. We did a lot of exercise for warmups, too, pushups, situps, running, stretches, squat thrusts, etc. too. I only did it for a year though, gave up because I started almost passing out during heavy exercise. I would recommend it though. Oh you also do some striking, too.

Everyone has to remember that at least one person who posts on Psycho Sonnys account is "immature" Don't listen too hard to what he says.
