I would be grateful for some opinions on an Asus 4850 (as i can find little info in the forums for the 4850, maybe it is tooooooo old )

I have set the core to 750MHz and the Memory to 2260/1130 with Asus Smart Doctor. I am assuming this is a safe overclock as i have not increased any voltage.
Seems to cope fine at this OC with Heaven Benchmark and reached a temp of 63-65 and holding after 30 mins.

I am wondering if:
  • Is this a safe OC and temps for a 4850?
  • Should i be able to get it higher then this? (average for a 4850), and would i benefit from higher?
  • MSI Afterburner will not let me change the voltage (even after enabled in settings). Would i benefit from increasing the voltage to enable a higher OC? or is it even possible with this card?

Any recommended safe settings are welcomed.
Thanks

Usually most won't go past 800MHz or so on stock voltage (you can do this by flashing the editing your BIOS with RBE and flashing it with the modded BIOS). Your temps are fine, you have a lot of headroom.....usually people try to keep temps below 85-90c

Sorry to hijack your thread but seeing as these cards are so old it makes sense to post in here.

I've had this card for nearly three years now and I still have the stock cooler. It's terrible. Idles at 80c and resets the PCs when I play some games. I need to get it sorted so I'm wondering what's the best cooler for this card that requires the least amount of hassle to fit? Perhaps I could just buy another card to tide me over until I can afford a new rig? Any suggestions?

The stock cooler should be performing better than that. Either it's clogged with dust, not seated properly, or both.

Try taking off the cooler, cleaning it out, and reseating it with fresh thermal paste.

I've tried cleaning it as well as possible without removing the cooler but I guess applying some clean paste will help. I'll get some ordered up.

Scratch that, I think I'm going to order a new card. I've got the 512mb edition and I've since purchased a 24inch widescreen so it can't handle the higher resolution too well. Any recommendations for a cheap upgrade?

Sorry for the double post but just wanted to try catch your attention :)

Depends on your budget. Best bang/buck would be a 5850 or similar. You'll be astounded at the difference.

Well mate I've got an E7200 (dual core) clocked to 3.6 and 4GB of RAM so I'm not too keen on spending too much as the card's potential won't be reached. What do you reckon? I did have my eye on http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-025-HS but I'm willing to spend less or more if it's justified :)

Edit

Seeing as the 5770 is on offer at the moment so only £10 more than the 5670 I think I'll go for that. Overkill?

The 5770 wont give you massive gains over the 4850, Tbh its hardly worth bothering about upgrading too, But if your on a budget the money talks, as suggested above the 5850 is a worthy upgrade,The e7200 will be fine

Well it's an extra £40 and I've already placed my order. I'd be interested to hear others opinions on this though as I'll cancel the order and place a new one if it's worthwhile.
