Every Christmas for the last few I have bought a game for my wife and I to play over the holidays.

Lost cities
Pandemic
Carcassone South seas
Camel Up

These have all bee a great success but I am not sure what to get this year. At the moment the front runners are T.I.M.E stories and Colt Express. What do you guys think?

Light strategy and thematic for 2 or more players basically...coop is good

I'll recommend XCOM: The board game

Max 4 player but you can play solo, 2 or 3 player. Its Co-op with each player taking on a role (or 2). Its app based (free) so that will guide you through what to do as you only get the how to set it up in the box). We've won 70% of games but it can get hectic (as the timer counts down and your dice rolls get worse)

So from your list there, it looks like you are currently into fairly light games with some hand management and looking to get into something a bit more mid range. Perhaps more meaty than Pandemic?

First off I would definitely recommend: -
  • Jaipur - Cheap and every couple should own Jaipur, it is just a nice game.
  • Splendor - Great two player game that also allows more players
  • Biblios - Nice and simple, some people find it a little boring and some people love it though.
  • Love Letter because it is cheap, plays 2 or more and well everyone should own it.

  • Castles of Mad King Ludwig - Who doesn't like building castles and this game is just filled with something magical.

You might want to consider 7 Wonders as well. It has hand management, plays 2 or more players and is about the right level going from the games you have.

Hopefully she doesn't read this but I'm planning to get my wife Sherlock Holmes consulting detective for Xmas (I havnt looked at this years but SUSD normally have it near if not at the top of any list)

Are you into racing games by any chance? I only say that because earlier this year I picked up Thunder Alley on a recommendation as a better racing game than Formula D when played with only 2 players!

I was kinda skeptical about it being much fun (although I do enjoy NASCAR) but watched a Dice Tower review of it and 2 weeks later it appeared in the restock list of Gameslore.

Utterly superb package though - comes with 4 tracks in the box, enough components for 6 players, scales superbly for 2 players and most importantly? It's loads of fun!

The overall premise is simple - be the winner but you have to remember you're managing a whole team of cars and you want to bring home as many as possible. Play is simple by drafting/playing cards and moving your chosen car the requisite number of spaces.

The rub is the cars draft together just like in real NASCAR. Moving a lead car will likely drag every car behind it forwards but you can use this to your advantage to move cars that have already played this round or are even damaged making them move slower.

I've waffled on far too much but looks dull but plays fantastically and superb levels of strategy mixed with just enough luck that you can't always plan everything out! I took it to my local game group and in just 1 play the war gamer there went out and bought a copy just like that!

That said if you like bashing each other (and your friends) over the head then give Blood Rage a whirl!

Polar opposite games but brilliant in both cases!

Nope you can play 7 Wonders with two players, it comes with a variant (which me and my wife really like). It is more fun with 3 or more players, but it is still a great game and the OP said 2 OR MORE, so it fits.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, much appreciated.

I ended up buying "Artefacts Inc." after hearing dice tower recommend it as a light worker placement game with a strong theme.

I'll let you know how we get on after Christmas!

Light game, fun and works with two people? I'd recommend Jaipur as an excellent two player game that even my missus can enjoy without being confused at all the rules.

It only plays two so for larger groups I'd recommend Camel Up as a fun party game.
