What should I replace 4000+ with?

Hi,

I currently have an AMD 4000+ cpu, running @ 2750Mhz stable.

I've got upgrade fever though, and I think the only thing to do is turn to the darkside and get a C2D.

But which one?

What C2D would you recommend for OC capabilities, in real terms, i.e. I'll notice the performance gains. It's nice to have massive 3Dmark scores but I'm more interested things that I can actually see working faster and smoother.

If you want to stay on s939 you can get an X2 or dual core Opteron

As for C2D, the E6300 or E6600 are good choices both will overclock to 3Ghz+ easy enough both those will blow the 4000+ out of the water.

Nope, I'm going to move to an Intel chipset I think.

So what one should I go for, the e6300 or e6600? And what mobo?

And you're confident either of these out performs the 4000+?

Until a few weeks ago I had a 4000 stable at 3.1Ghz but am now running an opty 165 @ 2.45Ghz and its brilliant - multi-tasking is a dream compared to the 4000 and its not gunna break the bank - if indeed you plan on staying with 939 for another few years :)

if you got a x2 or dual core opty on s939 then your next upgrade should be no less than quad core. anything else does not make sense

I moved from a 4000+ clocked at 2.795ghz to my E4300 rig clocked at 3.4ghz and the difference as absolutely massive. Especially in games. No doubt due to the 8800, even though i did have sli'd 7800gt's before.

Nothing else makes sense, except maybe faster Dual Core?

Rember the days when everything was single core? Well your only option was to get a faster single core, going Quad at the same speed is really going to be no advantage at the moment unless he's rendering 3D etc.

Playing games with 2 cores is still a bonus not a given, and I hardly see 4 cores being used in most apps and games till well in to 2008.

Oh yeah, and he's only running a SIngle core 4000+, reading the OP helps :)

You want an E6420 (they have double the cache and cost a couple of quid more than the 2MB E6400).

Pair that with a Gigabyte DS3 and clock it with a decent aircooler and you'll in a whole new league over the 4000+

Has the E6420 been released yet? OCuk don't seem to stock it... :(

Will the E6600 still out perform it?

Also, is it a bad time to be buying a processor what with the alleged price drop in a week or two?

That a fast processor speed.

Yup its gets us all from time to time, its normally caused by boredom or perhaps working hard and having the need to splash-the-cash, simple cure is to ask yourself what is the difference between what you want and what you need?

Well I guess it depends what these 'things' are, in general useage I don't think you will notice the difference between your nice overclocked 4000+ and a new Core2 Duo. If you do any media encoding then a dual core is handy and gaming is a bit smoother but it really isn't anything amazing, just a new processor bit faster than the last one. a lot of people just exaggerate the performance increase, either that or they owned a Pentium 3 533MHz prior to upgrading :p

Ocuk don't stock the e6420 yet it seems. Any idea what price it'll go for? Is it worth waiting until the alleged price drop in a week or so? Or should I just go for a e6600, which seems to out perform the e6420 on the sites I've looked on.

£130-£135

If you can afford it but the e6400/e6420 look a litle more appealing at the moment, £150-£160 would be a good price to pay e6600 but don't see them hitting that level new for a while, could probably grab one used for that price though.

OK, if I pin it down to either a e6600 or e6420, what motherboard should I get? P5N's seem to be very popular, for a good reason I suspect!

Sounds like you have answered your own question there, are you looking for other suggestions or do you want people to agree with what you think is best? :D
