What should i replace my pentuim D 945 with ? ?

Hi all,
I have my new ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard,
I have 4GB of GEIL BLACK DRAGON PC2 8500 (1066MHZ)
I have my VISTA ULTIMATE 64BIT OS,, , , ASUS V - 60 HEATSINK/FAN.
ZALMAN FAN/TEMP CONTROLLER, & 8800GTS GRAPHICS.
COOLERMASTER WAVE CASE. 2 X SATA 320GB DRIVES.
I have everything i need exept my 650watt psu, which i will have early next week. Only then, can i start putting it all together.

And i have my presents pcs cpu for a starter ( am spent up at the mo !)
Its a PENTUIM D 945 ( DUAL CORE ) running at 3.4ghz.

When i next get some cash together and buy a core 2 processor , , which one would be my best bet, , i/e massive,, noticable,, difference from my Pentium D ? ? ?
Its not a gaming machine, , its for a DAW, , for pro music recording using cubase software and soft synthesizers, , so graphics isnt a big issue for me, hence the 8800gts, , , unless any of the £50 -£100 new HD cards can be recommended as a big step up from the 8800 ! !

Sorry for rambling, , back to the question , , , , what core 2 cpu should i go for to replace my pentium D 945 dual core 3.4ghz proccy ? ? ?

Thats why I hate buying bits for a new build one at a time you can guarantee the one you bought first will be the one that fails to work and is out of the 14 day return period.
