Been playing BF4 in the last week. It's ok but slow and crashes a lot. What would be the best upgrades I could make ?.

I'm considering memory as the first and cheapest option ?

Thanks

J

You have 8GB of moderately fast memory so I wouldn't bother upgrading that yet.

I'd suggest monitoring VRAM usage as a starting point as you may be hitting the 1.5GB limit of your card (if it appears so, try lowering texture or AA settings and see if that helps).

I try and run it on med at 1920x1080 with AA off or lowest. It runs faster on low detail but flickers/ slow draw a lot and looks a mess.

Not tried lowering the res yet though....

My settings in Afterburner are...

Core voltage 1075 (bumped it up since getting a few crashes with other games as well)
Core Clock 860
Shader Clock 1720
Memory Clock 2048
Fan Speed (auto/max 40)

Get a new Graphics card with a bit more VRAM and you'll be set.

I have a similar setup to you but have a 7950 with 3GB VRAM, Battlefield 4 runs awesome at 1080p, Ultra settings with no AA.

A new GPU would be a good move, something like an R9 280X would be ideal. (If you want to stick with nvidia then I wouldn't advise getting anything with less that 3Gb of Vram)

What OS are you using? Upgrading from windows 7 to windows 8 / 8.1 also give a good performance upgrade for systems that can make use of direct x 11.1

Win 7 64 bit.....

It seems I would prob need to spend about £200-£250 on a new GPU ?

I've heard AMD/Radeon is superior to Nvidia at least for BF4 ?

If you shop around a 7950 can be had for around £170 brand new, most of which easily OC to similar speeds as a stock 7970/280x. Defo OC your CPU too.

Overclock your CPU, if you have the cash, buy a 770 or a 7950, but that all depends on your preference of AMD and Nvidia.

My 770 runs BF4 at max settings at 1920x1080, but it is Gigabytes overclocked 4GB edition. Luckily i saved £20 as it was on offer.

Your best bet is AMD for a cheap card, but the 780ti is far more powerful than anything AMD have... for now.

I wouldn't touch BF4 yet until they actually release a working patch. It crashes all the time and is unplayable and i'm not the only one just take a look on the forum.

In this order below..;)

GTX 780ti
GTX Titan
GTX 780
R290x
R290
Pickup a secondhand GTX 680 or HD7970

Cheapest option
Get a second GTX 580 to run in SLI (But I wouldn't recommend this due to them only having 1.5gb of vram :()

And overclock your i5 CPU to 4.4GHz
