This is my current gaming system:

1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail
2 x MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Boost Edition 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-OC Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW)
1 x 1TB HD
1 x Samsung Blu ray rewriter
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G213C1K)
1 x Thermalright True Spirit 140 BW Cooler
1 x XFX ProSeries (XXX Edition) 850W
1 x Fractal Design ARC Miditower R2 Side Window
1 x QNIX 27" 2560 x 1440p IPS screen

I am looking to switch to the best clocked 1080 as I dont really overclock, I'm also looking for a new monitor with GSYNC however I'm torn over a dual set up or one monitor and a new large capacity hard drive too.

Which upgrades would put the system ahead?

Aside from the graphics card that system is still fine. Gsync is great, but of course then you are tied to nvidia cards if you want to get the most from the monitor. And monitors are components that most people hold onto for a good while. Thought about a higher capacity ssd too?

Yeah I've thought about it which do you recommend? I would use it to store media such as games etc.

How about the memory? Should I go to 16gb? ddr3?

Get a better card and overclock the hell out of the CPU. I use 2 x 980ti MSI for 1440p myself and games all run sweet. Either go with the 980ti which is cheap now, 1070/1080 and you could SLI in the future. The 1070 is a little better than the 980ti so would be a better choice, but if wanting a single card for 1440p get a 1080. 16gb ram is about what you want yeah, you don't need any more for gaming.

If your running out of space a lot then definitely get another HDD, other than that i would just get the 1080 like you said. A second monitor can be handy if you like browsing while your gaming mind if you browse on chrome ya might need the extra ram after all :D

The only things I would upgrade are the GPU and memory. Go to 16GB of RAM and get yourself a current GPU. Ideally a powerful one as you are running 1440P.

The rest of your system is fine. Sure, a bigger SSD would be nice, but only buy it if you need it (ie, you are running out of space).

Although Skylake and Kaby lake are nice, they aren't really massive upgrades over Haswell.

as above get an updated gpu some more ram and your set. what PSU are you running though? if its not a good quality one I would think about replacing this at the same time as the GPU.

Is your QNIX monitor the one with only DVI in? Or does it have multiple inputs.

The single DVI input variant is well renowned for overclocking really well. I've had mine running at 100hz for 3 years. Now combined with a 1080 I am able to enjoy many games at max/near max settings at 1440p and get minimums of around 80fps.

Thanks guys but which RAM should I get ddr3 is getting harder to come by these days?
