I installed ASUS PC Probe II and it keeps on giving me warning messages about my vcore being 1.12, sometimes it drops to 1.10 , then up to 1.36 etc..

what is my vcore supposed to be?

I have an Asus A8n sli deluxe with an opty 170...

PSU is a 500W Enermax

system is approx 6 years old

do I need a new PSU? how can i know for sure?

I tried CPUz and it also reads the vcore as 1.1

oh and my PC shutdown while playing Crysis... happened once but haven't had a chance to play since yesterday...I know 100% that the heatsink contact is ok since I reset it recently and idle temps show around 50C which is normal for an AMD Opteron (90nm) I think...

Your vcore is the power supplied to the CPU. Too little vcore for the clock speed and it'll blue screen/be unstable. Too much vcore for the cooling and you'll cook the chip.

Edit: Things like Speedstep, Cool & Quiet and PowerNow! adjust the clock speed and vcore dependent on CPU load.

Brian is spot on, although I'd be worried about 1.36V, it's very high unless your processor and motherboard are seriously hardcore.

Your system is likely just getting old, you've done well with it for 6 years. Is an upgrade feasible atm?

if I remember right then 1.35 is stock voltage for you chip.

I take it that ASUS probe is warning about low core voltage.
If this is the case and the core voltage is dropping, without the aid of any c-states. Then this will cause instabilty.

This Voltage fluctuation, when is it happening ? load, idle or both ?
